Ive read the 6.2 and 6.5 is built by detroit diesel. Does GM own detroit or some of the company? The reason I ask is Iv read in some antique tractor books, john deere and oliver used some detroit engines and other books call the same engine a GM diesel. If GM does own some or all of detroit why did they go to the D max?

Up until about 9 years ago GM owned DETROIT DIESEL, they sold it to DAIMLER BENZ. And the original 6.2 was designed by DETROIT DIESEL for GM to meet there specs for a diesel engine that could easily fit into the trucks that they had with minimal changes. But GM actually produced all of the 6.2's and I believe GM did the redesign of the 6.2 into the 6.5. They switched to the D-max because they had already sold DETROIT and had stock in ISUZU who had a reputation for building small dependable diesels that lasted. It was only logical for them to turn to ISUZU to build the D-max when they needed an update of the old 6.5.
