: Opinions Wanted - Frame mounted fuel filter vs. engine mount

I would like to hear opinions concerning the pro's and cons of frame mounted fuel filters such as the RACOR 32313 kit versus engine mounts such as the Mega Filter. I do not have a clue about either but the simplicity of a straigtline fuel filter attached to the frame of the truck seems to be the easiest. Thanks for your comments. Ed

I went with frame because I didn't want to lose my spare alternator position or relocate stuff for the Mega. I have other plans for that area.

Initially went with the airbox install then moved to the alternator locale. In essence either one has it strong points/weak points.

These can be any brand, any location and you'll find both thumbs up and naysayers. Bottom line, pick your spot where it's the easiest for you and won't interfere with any future plans and be happy.

The only thing that has never been questioned is whether or not it's a good thing.

Went with the Nictane frame mount, But it sits higher up then you would think, added the Wheel liners/Mudflaps with the extensions from GM-direct and folded the excess above my running boards and below the filter, so with Nicks bracket and these flaps it almost totally protected, No problems so farhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif, I have Dual Alternators so engine mount was not an option. Good Luck!

I went with the Racor. TurbineDoc essentially did the entire install while I watched. Location is good unless you are rock crawling, however, the wiring is a bit scary for someone not real mechanical. Tim was essentially my savior on this as I would not have attemoted the wiring on my own. Greg's kit @ Lube Specialists is likely to be simpler, and cheaper. Did not go with Nicktane because of service manager issues. Think the Mega is a good concept, but was concerned about the reported potential need for a lift pump, but John may have that solved.

The frame mount Racor kit comes with a high number of recommendations from knowledgeable contributors to this website. I'm really concerned about warranty issues. With the engine compartment mounted filters, it would be easy for a service manager or tech to find it and that could prompt them to recite the GM warranty. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif If the filter were frame mounted, it would be more difficult for them to discover.

I will be going with the frame mounted Racor system. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

I was thinking about this too. When I lift my truck and go mudding I don't want to have to worry about ripping off the secondary filter. I know for sure that some of the trails I'll be going through will have mud up to the frame rails even with 37's

The Mega is too big to be engine mounted. Most were mounted under the air box. Both the engine mounted http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/1DA_112_1206.JPGRacor and the frame mount have gotten very good fuel test. Later! Frank

Post oem/after the stocker makes the most sense imho.

I've got the Kennedy Mega half gallon under airbox filter and will change it out at 20k which may be a bit early I don't know.

Changed the stocker out at 12k and it was black and plugged as the truck is running seemingly better since I changed it.

My Kennedy Mega is tucked up under the airbox and behind the headlight. It's almost "out of sight out of mind" protected by the front wheel liner and I plan to run it for 30,000 miles before changing filters. The only thing that I had to "move around" (other than routing the two fuel hoses) to install it was unbolting and flipping the horn - one bolt. Works for me!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

After investigating the cost of a fuel system repair job, which can range into the thousands of dollars, ie: injector replacement (all 8) and pump etc etc, I decided to have an extra fuel filter installed to protect my Dmax from the dirty fuel that is out there. To me an ounce of prevention is more affordable than the cure in this case. It is a RACOR 445R (pre-OEM) and the element is a R90S (2 micron) with water separator and drain with the option of a water detector and fuel heater if I so desire to hook these up someday. As was stated above I to was concerned about warranty issues so i had a Chevy dealer install the filter assy and guess what, no more warranty issues. The frame didn't seem like a very logical spot to mount the assy so I had it mounted next to the AC pump and just above the power steering pump under the hood. The only part relocation was the battery boost box (red, see piture below). It sure is a lot easier to service, change element & drain water seperator than having to climb under the truck especially in the winter and rain!!! There's no way and why would anyone want to hide a fuel filter from the service departmrnt. If they put truck up on hoist how do you hide your frame mounted filter?? Good luck..................................Steve...

Ed,

Another option is to cover all the bases with both a PRE-OEM frame mount filter and a post-OEM Engine mount filter.

I have a 30 micron Pre-Filter ( http://community.webshots.com/album/77018086bLHHHC) (Stanadyne FM100 mounted on the frame with a lift pump) and the Mega Filter under the Air Box. (http://community.webshots.com/album/67970835fahHeh)

Also I called Stanadyne recently with a question about the FM100 see-thru bowl option and they told me they are coming out with a 10 micron element for the FM100 (currently they have 2, 5, 30, & 150). They also plan to offer a Frame Mount FM100 in Kit form for the Duramax (similar to the RACOR). I'll probably switch to the 10um filter in my FM100 if becomes available but I would also add the fuel heater option for the cold NE winters.

Frank, what type of setup do you have and where can I order. I like the setup you have.

Thank you for the info. sduprey@coopelev.com
