Wiseman 03-02-2004, 08:44 PM I put mine in a vise and used a hack saw. Worked just fine http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.

Topgas 03-02-2004, 09:31 PM Sawsall has worked fine for me. Cut length wise and make sure you cut through the gray plastic center and you can fold it apart. Wear gloves when handling....
Frank Blum 03-02-2004, 09:44 PM Ditto the Saws-all with a very fine tooth blade. Later! Frank
Deadeye 03-02-2004, 10:10 PM How about a big, sharp, heavy axe with a good eye!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
CMC-GMC 03-02-2004, 10:20 PM Even though I still have a few thousand miles before my first filter change I bought an exhaust pipe cutter from Harbor Freight for $15. Should work like a champ for the filter. I wouldn't use it on pipe it's to brittle looking. You might look around at used tool stores or places like Harbor Freight for something like that.

duramaxdiesel 03-02-2004, 10:38 PM Thanks for the ideas. Looks like I'll use the sawzall and tear into it. Is it worth opening up the Allison spin on too?
Burner 03-03-2004, 12:07 AM Why not just use a plasma torch or a regular torch?

CRUSHER 03-03-2004, 04:27 AM I use a Dremel Tool---Works great!-----Phil
jbplock 03-03-2004, 07:04 AM I've used a die grinder with a 3" abrasive cut-off wheel for opening oil and fuel filters..

habanero 03-03-2004, 08:22 AM I use a die grinder as well, but you want to make sure you have a fire extinguisher ready. I have had a couple instances where the metal got hot enough to start a very small diesel fire on the filter. Never anything serious, though.
MaxFarmer 03-03-2004, 08:53 AM I think a metal chopsaw would work the same way. Thats what I plan on using the first time anyway..

dirty old man 03-03-2004, 10:09 AM Clamp it in a vise upside down, start at the center where WIF sensor attaches with a pair of channel locks and you can peel it apart fairly easily. No metal dust created by the saw to confuse the examination!
Chevysrus 03-03-2004, 01:20 PM Just bite the freakin end off and spit out the filter part.....JEZ are we Men or Wimps! LOL ha ha ha
Dental appointment in the morning, Doc says "didn't know you had braces", You pull out a screwdriver and start picking at your teeth and say "Sorry Doc, meant to clean them after that filter inspection last night" LOL ha ha ha
Dmaxcan 03-03-2004, 04:24 PM I still think the cutting torch is the best idea. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
