http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/14/14_4_100.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001) Ok I don't have a fancy tool to open up my fuel filters. Is there anything else I can use to open it up. If not, Sawzall here I come.

I put mine in a vise and used a hack saw. Worked just fine http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.

Sawsall has worked fine for me. Cut length wise and make sure you cut through the gray plastic center and you can fold it apart. Wear gloves when handling....

Ditto the Saws-all with a very fine tooth blade. Later! Frank

How about a big, sharp, heavy axe with a good eye!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Even though I still have a few thousand miles before my first filter change I bought an exhaust pipe cutter from Harbor Freight for $15. Should work like a champ for the filter. I wouldn't use it on pipe it's to brittle looking. You might look around at used tool stores or places like Harbor Freight for something like that.

Thanks for the ideas. Looks like I'll use the sawzall and tear into it. Is it worth opening up the Allison spin on too?

Why not just use a plasma torch or a regular torch?

I've used a die grinder with a 3" abrasive cut-off wheel for opening oil and fuel filters..

I use a die grinder as well, but you want to make sure you have a fire extinguisher ready. I have had a couple instances where the metal got hot enough to start a very small diesel fire on the filter. Never anything serious, though.

I think a metal chopsaw would work the same way. Thats what I plan on using the first time anyway..

Clamp it in a vise upside down, start at the center where WIF sensor attaches with a pair of channel locks and you can peel it apart fairly easily. No metal dust created by the saw to confuse the examination!

Just bite the freakin end off and spit out the filter part.....JEZ are we Men or Wimps! LOL ha ha ha

Dental appointment in the morning, Doc says "didn't know you had braces", You pull out a screwdriver and start picking at your teeth and say "Sorry Doc, meant to clean them after that filter inspection last night" LOL ha ha ha

I still think the cutting torch is the best idea. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
