Just what kind of mileage can one get with a 4x4 2500 Duramax at 60 miles per hour or 100 k per hour speeds.

Well on my longest road trip to date Milwaukee To Plymouth I got a high of 21.31. This was 4 passengers and luggage for 6(mother in law and baby flew). Most of the trip was around 70mph with some mountains.

My lifetime average is 18.85(14,600 miles) with the previous stated high, and a low of 14.25.

My last 13 tanks have all been over 19mpg, most of which have been 19.5 or better. These motors definitely get better with age http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Ab Slayer,

If you stay at 60mph, don't fight headwinds, stops-starts and stay in a lower elevation, you WILL GET OVER 21MPG.

Noone drives that slow without getting smashed from behind sooner or later. If you do, every trucker will signal you as #1 while scrambling to avoid you as they ride by.

Here's what I have got since i bought the truck. Bear in mind a lot of my driving is traffic. Also i have a lead foot and like to spank those little civic's http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif. The 7.4 MPG was when my fuel rail was leaking as most of it went on the highway...

Way to go Diesel Power! Finally someone who is posting some numbers that look more like the reality that I see. Sorry to say, but I think a lot of people exagerate (that's a very polite term) what they actually get. I don't drive like some old grandpa, but I'm not running on the Indy track either.

Running the calculator against the DIC the numbers are very close. Usually about 1/4 mpg either way. Trailering can skew the DIC numbers. With 7200 miles on the odometer, my overall average on the DIC which hasn't been reset, it 13.0 mpg. On the DIC for a single tank of fuel (or fill up) I've seen a low of 6 mpg (offroading for the weekend at Silver Lake sand dunes) to a high of 17.8 (mostly highway without the travel trailer).

For a vehicle that tips the scales at over 6500 lbs, it's massive size and height, I don't consider the mileage to be too bad.

Diesel Power;

Holy cow man! You got one of those huge tanks or something? You sure take on a lot of fuel in a stop! I looked at those on the transferflow site the other day, but it's kind of hard for me to justify the kind of money they want to expand the fuel capacity of the truck.

I know people exagerate their fuel economy. I have an Aunt and we once had identical 4-dr S-Series SUV's with the 4.3L V-6. Funny thing, I always got 17 or 18 with mine, which was as I recall within what the EPA rating was and she always got 22 or 23 with hers. Amazing. I guess the biggest liar always wins. And ya know what, after you've burned a tank of fuel, it's too late to improve the fuel economy at that point anyway and when the tank is completely empty, tennis shoe transportation is the next mode.

I once knew a guy that got so good of milage in his Ford PU, he had to take a 5 gaallon gas can along to suphon gas out of the fuel tank!! Nobody could outdue him on gas milage!!!!

Best I've ever gotten was 24.2 miles per USgallon on a 300 mile jaunt, used cruise control 99% of the time doing the speed limit (half 56mph/90pkh and half 62mph/100kph)

My last tank I got 18.5, lots of screwing around in town having fun with the go-pedal. The DIC was 0.3MPG off from my pump calculation, dunno which is more accurate.

Yeah the tank is big... i wish it didn't hang down but really like it onlong trips..also with the way diesel prices flucuate, i buy it cheap. thenit goes up, and then back down..then i buy it again...just gotta make sure i don't drive too much until the price comes back down.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Labor day weekend I put 1200 miles on my 2001 Duramax 2500HD, 2wd, from Columbus, Ohio, thru Pennsylvania to Philadelphia, through northern Pa. Average MPG was 19.7. Drove quite agressively, however..

LARSONEM

I do believe that the 2wd trucks get a "little" better mileage due to slight weight differences and not having power go through a transfer case even when running in 2wd mode of a 4x4. But I don't believe that a 2wd get enormously higher mileage than a 4x4. All bets are off though in the winter when differentials are cold and crankcase oil is cold also. Cold weather can take a toll on mileage.

My Crew cab long box Duramax is averaging 18.8 lifetime, 27,500 miles.

My DIC is very accurate as compared with calcing it by hand & I have a spreadsheet from mile 3 on the odometer.

Best full tank (calced & DIC) was 21, but that was cruise control through nebraska at about 65mph unloaded.

Worst full tank was 14.1, hauling.

So yes, my high numbers seem exagerated, but they are what they are. :)

p.s. - DIC said 21.5 on a 100 mile drive this morning.

Bullseye54
09-19-2003, 05:59 PM
The best I got was 18.5 w/cruise set on 65.Usually about same as Diesel Power.Towing our 5th wheel I get about 8.5-9.5.I must be doing something wrong seeing some of the others.

Ray403Dmax
09-19-2003, 06:05 PM
It's not impossible to get over 20mpg with a 2500HD 4x4 Dmax/Ally. Definitely not an exageration. In fact it's very likely that anyone can do it. First, you need to get into the correct frame of mind. That's to say, put your old man hat on and drive with no care for being anywhere, anytime soon. The last time I did it I was able to get over 21mpg at a 65 to 68mph speed, no accelerating around traffic. And I did stop in a small town with some a traffic lights prior to turning around for the round trip mileage.

The rumor about diesel engines is true, they are more fuel efficient, and dividends are paid when they run in the low rpm band where torque is high. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

It was hard to believe my numbers at first, so I took my gps & checked my speedometer at 70mph & it was perfect.

I also checked my digital odometer verses a 10 mile check area near me, and it too came out exacly 10 miles on my odometer.

I don't know why some trucks get better than others, but I am glad mine is one of the better ones.

If I did have a DIC it would be covered with a piece of tape. Interesting to look at but use the calculator to get the best figure. I don't believe 6.5 mpg on any Dmax. I am at 18.7 overall running solo for approximately 29K. There are several here with the same figures. My last truck was a 99 Silverado with a 5.3. It only averaged 16.4 for 32K. 20 MPG at 60 is not a problem even here in the Rockies. Later! Frank

I've averaged @ 19.5 MPG, 95% highway at 65-70 MPH. Use the cruise control whenever possible.... I recently installed the Nicktane fuel filter and now I'm in the 20 MPG range (only ran 1 tank so far with the extra filter). Current mileage on truck is 28K. It has slowly improved with the added mileage.

Just want to thank Nic for his little chart,http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif made me feel a ton better. I was really starting to wonder what was wrong with my truck. Sure hope things get better when I get the quad! At the same time our highways out here are 75 mph with everyone driving 80mph. Thats gotta be the difference.

2000 rpm seems to be the point that my mileage drops off. My best tank was 23.8 driving across Wyoming unloaded at 65mph. Worst was driving east across Texas pulling my 7000lb fithwheel into a strong headwind an 80mph. It was 7.8mpg.I usually get between 19.5 and 20.5 unloaded. Best mileage towing was 14.2, but usually between 10.5 and 12.

I find it interesting how very close the DIC is, not on instant fuel economy, but on the MPG in the trip odometer running tank to tank. It's really very close.

At my first fillup, 135 miles, towing and city driving, lots of low speed through the campground cruising, 12.8 mpg. Would have gotten around 9.5 doing the same thing with my old 454. I filled up at 1.47, regular was 1.63.

k1xv

I am using the DIC to measure fuel mileage on a daily basis, rather than a "Tank to Tank" basis. This is because I cannot always pump my own fuel and some of the pump jockeys stop pumping as soon as the nozzle trips. However, I have found the DIC to be quite accurate with stock tires. I reset the personal mileage/gallons used every day and have logged the gallons used over time, and it matches reasonably well with the gallons purchased.

My mileage varies from 17 mpg on days with short trips with traffic, but most of my driving is open road with speeds varying from 65-75. I can honestly say that I am disappointed if the DIC reads under 20 mpg, and I regularly record in the 21-22.5 range, sometimes slightly higher. I find that it makes a difference whether I am gaining or losing elevation. When I originate in NJ for a trip to Vermont, the elevation gain is about 2100 feet (200 ft to 2300 feet) and when I go the other way, I drop 2100 feet. This is in about 260 miles. I normally see a difference of about 1 mpg depending on whether I am going up to the mountains or down from the mountains.

Also, when going north, I am usually carrying about 500-700 pounds of cargo, whereas the other way I am usually empty.

I also run fairly high tire pressures, even when empty. I run about 55 front and 65 rear. I do this because underinflation and Firestone tires to do not mix.

Our "mountains" here are much older than yours. At one time many eons ago they were over 30,000 feet, but time has worn them down. So show respect for old age.
