Hello. I am considering buying a 2001 Duramax 2500hd, ext cab, 4x4 with Allison Automatic. It only has 43K miles, bed is a little rough, but bedliner that covers some of the bed rails would help out a lot.

Would anyone care to let me know what to look for before buying? It is at a Chevy dealer and is a one owner. The last diesel I had any experience with was a 1990 6.2L my Dad had. Thanks for any possible help!

Was it used to tow or daily driver, etc? Might want to post the VIN number and see about getting a check done on it. This will tell you what has been done to the truck, ie service records? What is your overall impression of the truck?

I am sure you will get a few other people to chime in here and you will get tons more ideas.

If it is a chevy dealer, i would get them to print you a copy of the warrenty claim log that is in the gm database. I did this a month after i bought my truck and realized it had two clutch/flywheel replacments in 20000 miles. if i would have known this, i would have bought an allison auto instead of the 6-speed

Thanks for your response. No major records found at dealership. Trans services, alignment, a few minor things. It had a gooseneck set up. According to dealership, truck towed small cattle trailer and hauled firewood. My impression is that is has low miles, was worked some of those miles on a farm and that's about it. My use for it will be daily driver and that's it. Possibly light towing.

Car Fax report is clean showing one owner. I'm not sure what other information I could get with the Vin. Thanks again!

another thing you may consider, here in Kentucky, it's the law for the dealer to provide you with the previous owner(s) name, address, and phone #

Thanks. My main concerns are the injectors and the Allison tranny. He seems to have serviced the trans. This thing run great and has a lot of power, looks good too. The interior has a faint smell of cigarette smoke, possibly shampoo should help out.....

I agree but from what ive seen, injector problems in the duramax is common, but it is a gamble with any of these duramax diesel trucks no matter what anybody did to maintain/prevent this, my truck has 61000 miles on the original injectors but could go any day. You just need to prepare for it and don't go into a shock coma if it does happen. but hopefully, it wont! as far as the truck you cant beat the power and fuel milage.

as far as the allison trans, i believe it will outlast any part of the truck. Allison has a very good reputation with these trans. They have run them in busses/motor coaches for years.

Thanks again for the information. I think I'll drive it again tomorrow and make up my mind then.
