: Oil cooler hose burst at highway speed. What now?

The other night an engine oil cooler line burst on my 94 c-3500 6.5 at highway speed (the right hand hose...inlet I think). As soon as I noted the low engine oil pressure I shut down and arranged a tow home. Problem is I am uncertain as to how far I may have travelled with virtually no oil in the engine.

I do know that about 6-7 miles prior I had checked the oil while fueling and found it full to mark so even if the leak had occured immediately that would have been the max distance at 55-65 mph. Presumably not all of that distance would have been without oil. I noted no knocking and no overheat in the engine but a dipstick check revealed zero oil on the stick.

Of course, I'm now replacing both lines with new. Question now is one of restarting the engine. Should I do a kerosene flush and drain of the crankcase prior to replacing oil and filter? (I had just changed the oil and filter prior to the failure dang it!)

Any advice will be appreciated. I wonder if there's an audible low oil/high temp buzzer system I could install too?

One of my aftermarket Greg hoses was mounted too close to the exhaust manifold, and burned in two on teh Interstate at the VA WV line. Cockpit filled with smoke immediately, and I pulled over. Had oil pressure before I shut engine off. Apparently in Sulfur Springs WV you can get custom hose sets made up at 8:00 PM on a Friday night. Mechanic had them made, picked them up, installed it, and I was on my way the same night. This was over a year ago and have had no known affects since.
