: Fumoto Valve Offroad
Stizo 09-19-2003, 12:30 AM I'm interested in getting the Fumoto valve for my truck but am a little concerned. Seems like it will make oil changes much neater. I like the idea of hooking up a hose to it and dumping the oil straight into a jug. How far down does this thing hang down though? I spend a fair aount of time offroad and don't feel like leaving ten quarts of oil in the woods because of a nice rock.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Unhappy.gif
Victory Red 09-19-2003, 07:07 AM It still sits a little above the crossmember. I removed the skid plate and never put it back on. I don't go offroad with this truck, but unless you happen to toss a rock directly at it, I don't see any real concerns.
Also if you still have your skid plate it still sits a little inside of where the plate ends.

Does this mean you would need to trim the skid plate for the Fumoto valve to fit with the skid plate on?http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15_4_102.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001)

Mackin 09-19-2003, 09:12 AM No trimming necessary ... Skid plate fits just fine ...

kid6725 09-19-2003, 09:13 AM I dont have one yet but i dont think you do ive never heard of anyone having to trim the skid plate to make it fit. The valve with the nipple allows you to attach a hose to drain into a jug or the container of your choice instead of on your skid plate.
Diesel Power 09-19-2003, 09:57 AM mine fit fine with the skid plate intact..
DMAX2DAMAX 09-19-2003, 08:13 PM Great http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/33.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001) because I would like to keep th skid plate and get rid of the mess draining the oil with the skid plate as it is.
Where is the best place to obtain the Fumoto valve? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10_1_6.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001)

Victory Red 09-19-2003, 08:33 PM Sorry about the confusion with the skid plate. I chose to leave mine off for BEFORE I got the Fumoto. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
Just never saw the need to put it back on. You'll love it, trust me I do. You can even buy a locking clip for it($1) if you're worried about it ever popping open. Never heard of it happening though, and hasn't happened to me in 9000 miles.
http://lubespecialist.com/Order/order.mv has them the cheapest I've seen
http://www.kennedydiesel.com has them as well(it's where I got mine from).
DMAX2DAMAX 09-19-2003, 10:21 PM Victory Red,
No problem about the confusion, I (http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15_1_48.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001) )don't make it very difficult for you!
Thanks for the links! Would it be the #F106N with the nipple connector and if yes will that one still clear the skid plate?
Please sayhttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/39.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001)?
Thanks again!

BamaFan 09-19-2003, 10:51 PM Yep ! That's the right one, and yes it works with the skid plate http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
DMAX2DAMAX 09-19-2003, 10:54 PM All right, I gotta go get me one http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/354.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001)
Thanks!

I paid $28.00, including shipping at the authorized Fumoto valve distributor:
https://ssl2.adhost.com/fumotovalve/
That was $28.00 incl shipping for the nipple version.
TX-DMAX 09-20-2003, 11:02 AM Stizo and Dmax2Damax--If you are worried about the off roading kicking up a rock or something and opening the value, you can do as I did. when you get the value, take a 1/4 npt die tap and thread the nipple and then get a 1/4 inch end cap and screw it on the nipple and even if the value should open the cap will keep the oil in. When you get ready to change the oil, take a small cresent wrench and unscrew the end cap and put your hose on the nipple and drain and get a adult brevagehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif and sit back and enjoy while she drains. No better way to change the oil, and no you don't have to remove the skid plate to use the Fumoto value.
good grief guys- thats why they make hand cleaner and drain pans afraid your gonna get your hands dirty, what kind of a gadagget they got out there to keep you from getting dirty or making a mess when you change filters especialy the O E M fuel filter. Just my 2 cents
Geno
I've got my truck on a 5,000 mile maintenance interval: Delvac 1, filter(s), lube and rotate the tires. The fumoto sure helps get it done with less steps/mess/hassle. Also, no more cleaning up behind the skid plate, etc.
Raptorrider 09-20-2003, 02:28 PM I don't know how to post a picture on here but I will try. It fits in the groove to keep the lever from popping up and opening. I do not know the name of it. I got it at a hardware store. It is a 3/4" snap type ring. You have all seen them. They used to use them on a lot of hoses. Has a couple of ears that stick out that you grab by the ears with pliers and press it open. About 75 cents. I think it is an option if you order it from Fumoto. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Raptorrider 09-20-2003, 03:02 PM I'll see if I can post the above pictures of the fumoto valve clamp. [/IMG]http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/Fumoto_valve_and_clip_005.jpghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/Fumoto_valve_and_clip_003.jpgEdited by: Raptorrider
OC_DMAX 09-20-2003, 03:27 PM If you cannot find the metal clip shown above, you can use a small tie-wrap in its place. The tie-wrap seats into the slot and prevents the lever from lifting up. I used the tie-wrap for the first year and a half until I bought a clip similar to above.
Another advantage of the Fumoto valve/nipple is the oil flows out past the skid plate. I found that without the Fumoto valve, as the last quart or so drains out, it drains onto the skid plate and creates a major mess to clean-up.
RanaExcavating1 09-20-2003, 10:28 PM I have had my valve on since the second oil change. 3 years and counting. Been through just about anything and have never had any issues other than making it so easy to change the oil you'll want to change twice!
I did however trim the skid plate during the first oil change, otherwise you will end up with about a 1/2 quart of oil in the skid plate. I think I cut a 1x1 notch out.
TX-DMAX 09-21-2003, 09:43 AM RanaExcavating1==Why did you have to trim your skid plate? With the fomoto nipple value all you have to do is put a hose on it and drain it in a bottle or pan, no mess, no fuss. Just wordering why you had to trim your plate.
Never mind my dumb question, I re-read your post and you said you did the trim job on your first oil change, before you installed the fomoto value. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif I shouldn't read things this early in the morning. Not woke up yet.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Stizo 09-22-2003, 01:07 AM Thanks for the input guys. Glad to hear the valve is tucked up there. I try to take it easy offroad but it's scary to see how scratched up the skid plates get. Too bad I have to wait until the second oil change to actually use the valve.
