The local dealer has a 2001 GMC 2500hd extended cab short box D/A with 34500 miles. Black, LT, 285s. Sold date was April of 01, so it has a month or so warranty left, 2 years on the motor. It has had the pump in the allison replaced under warranty. Nothing else major done under warranty. Drove it already and they haven't even had it through the shop yet to check it out. I like to drive them before they are cleaned so I can see what the real shape was when they were traded. When I started it it blew a little blue smoke for a few seconds then cleared up. It hadn't been started for 3 days but started great. Ran great except once I noticed it hesitated when stomped from an idle(when totally warmed up). None of the newer ones I tested did that. It has a loud squeaking coming from the pass. side back spring. Replace wear pads between springs? It appears the guy changed the fuel filter (there was diesel on top of it) and the oil before he drove down to trade. There is oil all over the entire underside of the truck, I am not sure if it is from the oil being dripped on the skidplate and then blowing back or from a problem. While laying under it I saw no obvious leaks. I did notice it has the black NSBU switch. It also has a one piece steel driveline.

Summary: Sweet looking and driving truck, leather not as bad as I thought it would be, just wondering if buying an 01 is a bad idea?

So questions are: What would you think of buying that truck, what TSBs or software updates or anything should be done to it, anything more to look for, any problems it may have soon?

VIN # 1GTHK29121E280903 I forgot to look on the door to see when it was really built. They said it went up to canada, but then was sold in Gillette WY. I know it wasn't canadian built by the VIN though.

Thanks..

I guess the price would be important to me..........

Duramax's can be found used........2001 has some unique things about it, if you intend on modifying it for more power there may be some hurdles with tuners that have not been addressed,

In all if you like it and the price is good, I would have to agree with Mackin...........get an extended warranty, haggle on it too.

The finance guy at the dealer offered up a 5/75K warranty for $2250.00 on my 2003 Tahoe with a $50/per visit deductable.

After some haggling I walked way getting a 7/100K no-deductable warranty for $1290.00..............

So never pay asking price.

Also tell the dealer you want a Carfax report and a History report from GM if they are a GM dealer, it will list all repairs under warranty,

Lastly, contact the previous owner and ask why he traded up......

The USA to Canada and back would flag me, check the hours meter by holding the Trip reset button in for a few seconds while the truck if key off/engine stopped.

Not saying anything is wrong but clusters show up on Ebay all the time, titles record mileage at the time of transfer, so maybe some research is a good idea.

My 2002 has 31,600 miles and 1100 or so hours.

Good Luck if you buy it, hope it's a good one.

01's arent as bad as some make them out to be. I would check the inderside closely and make sure the oil is just from the blowby tube. The spring squeak is just the pad being missing, they should fix that for you. I would go drive it again and see if it smokes again on startup.

Only get a GMPP extended warranty. A texas dealer on this site will make you a good deal

Thanks Eric. I also wonder why they did that pump twice. I will get the name of the guy that traded and ask him what was going on. They told me he traded because he had $900 a month payment and didn't need a diesel. Got a hemi.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif Poor fool. Anyway I also wonder why it still says kilometers there in that info when it was sold in gillette before so should have been converted already? It sure felt like it was in MPH when we drove it, 60 seemed like 60.

GMC-2002-Dmax- That's some good negotiation there. I dunno if I could get that good. I would rather take Duallyvette's advice and get it from someone on here anyway though, as long as the price was good. The thing about it going to Canada is supposedly that the truck was sold when Duramaxs were really hard to get so it was sent up there to be sold but came to WY when the dealer there couldn't get one from GM. Dunno if that is true but it sounds logical? I will check the hours next time I look at it.

White duramax, mackin, do your blowbys let out that much oil? Seemed like a lot. Anyway hopefully they will fix all this stuff when they run it through the shop, not just detail it and sell it.

The stuff with tuners on 01s was just that they couldn't reset the speed limiter and the tire size wasn't it?

Well turns out it doesn't matter, one of my so called friends that already had a 2001 duramax went and traded his for this one. Some people.... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I won't buy the one he traded as a matter of principle, plus it doesn't give me the "I need it" feeling this one gave me... And has 65k on it anyway...

Thanks anyway guys..
