How stong are these trannies? I just realized for the first time i can brake the rear tires loose if i powerbrake to about 1300rpm with the new exhuast on. I only did it once then i chickened out after all of the excitement and put it away. Will this tranny take a little powerbraking every once in a while or should i just avoid it like the plague. Thanks.
Also how hard should it be to get the wheels to spin on dry asphalt having a G-80 in the rear because it seems like it should be easier to do with a diesel.

well my 93 was just rebuilt due to my nephew doin j-burnouts with it but for the most part of everyday driving or mudding which i do and also pull a back hoe and pull a sled now and then at the local fairs during truck pulls i have no problems with mine what so ever. and the occasional burnouts will get expensive due to buying tires. keep the oil changed in it and it shouldnt let you down.

So as long as i take care of it (filter and oil changes) it should be ok. But i dont have to baby it right? I hate the tires on there anyways and it gives me a reason to get new ones.
If something did go south from this kind of use what would it most likely be in the transmission or the rear dif?

i have a 94 chevy will a built 350ci and beat the hell out of the thing in the dunes and the street never had a problem with the stock 4L80. I rebuilt th trans just to get more performace and blowed her up good. rebuild it agian and still beatin the hell out of her and not a problem.

Get you a trans temp guage and monitor them, 4L80's don't like high temps(like those you will see during a power brake). Strongly consider getting a transgo shift kit, larger cooler and putting a larger pan on it if your going to her have it once in awhile, they're fairly inexpensive and can be installed in your driveway with some basic tools.

First thing is , as stated by thefermanator on the larger pan and i strongly suggest a oil cooler , you can get one at the local parts store for around 40 to 60 dollars to keep it cool. Heat is the main consern for the 4l80e's that i have come across. I installed a cooler on the passenger side of my truck in front of the radaitor and ran the lines through the hole that the air cond. lines come through. If your trany does go south, more than likely you burnt the bands and can be rebuilt for around 350.00 if you do it yourself.

Thanks for the advice. I guess i will add the deeper transmission pan and bigger cooler to the "to do list". About the transgo kit though. I read on the site that it increases shift firmness among other things. What exactly do they mean by that. Is it going to break your neck when it shifts or do i have it all wrong. Also how hard would it be to install for a novice like me? I have been looking at one for a while now because they are relativaly inexpensive but i was not sure what exactly it is designed to do because i have never ridden in a vehicle with on in it. Thanks

I like my transgo kit. When overdrive hits, it is like it LOCKS completely and the truck actually "pulls" in overdirve, u r still pinned to the seat. the shidt from second to third is a little high but it is nice and firm. once it goes third to fourth, the speedo goes from 65 to 100 mph is a few seconds, i wish there was no governor on the speedo, she tops out at 100mph. It gets there QUICK though, but all my mods help a lot too.

I let my cousin do a burnout in my FORD last year, and long story short, the tires wouldnt spin and the tranny was shot. This was only 3 weeks after it was rebuilt, so I had to get it rebuilt AGAIN (under warranty the second time), and then as soon as I got the truck back I sold it.... I now have a 01 2500HD Gasser and I baby the thing, im sure the trans can handle it, it is a good tranny, but I baby this thing alot. Every fall I change the front and rear diff, t-case, tranny fluid, filter, and gasket, etc. Its been getting that service every fall, since new (previous owner showed me records), and I continue to do the same thing. Along with fuel filter when needed. Im one for fix it before its broke and maintenace is key in my book. Im hoping this truck will run 350k+ miles with the maintenance I treat it with.

Im not one to drive reckless anyway, especially with my name and number on the doors.

100 mph??

Holy crap! If I did that in mine, I think I'd see pistons shooting out the hood. I think I've had it up to 75 or so, but it was really talking then. Red line looked to be approaching fast. Mine shifts into OD at about 45 mph, though, on a normal acceleration. Never had much need to go faster in it, I guess.;)

Do you guys not have a factory trans. cooler in front. My truck has a factory one and I have a gauge. The highest I saw it go was 210 and that was towing 7000 lbs. up a 6% grade in 90 degree heat. I had a 700R4 and when that trans. was on it's way out it started running hot. I'd hit 250 degrees going up hill not towing and was with a B&M huge trans. cooler. I do know the trans. coolers drop about 30 degrees. I had a leak and when I bypassed the aftermarket cooler and it just ran through the rad. cooler it ran 30 hotter. So they definitely work.

I will be doing a build up on a 4L80 for 4 Wheel magazine in about a week. Nothing too fancy but a good strong four wheeler like most people need.

I just put in a Derale tranny pan on my 4L80E and it was nice. The only problem with putting in this pan was that I could not put in two bolts on the back of the pan because the Tranny mount was in the way. I didn't know how I could move the tranny mount a little bit so I could install the last two bolts. So far so good. Its not leaking from those two bolts so far and it probably won't. If someone has any ideas on how else I can put in those bolts I am open to suggestions.

Mine's a factory cooler. I had the small cooler from the factory and replaced it with a different factory cooler off a '94 Suburban (bigger). Have not towed with it since this switch, though, to tell if the bigger one made a difference. I didn't see above 200, but once, I think with the smaller cooler. Most of the time driving loaded down the highway it sits between 140-170. In town, it may get back up to 200, though.

Big pappa: take the bolts out of the mount and jack up tranny, use a line-up punch(or screwdriver) to put bolts back in

You got the bolts out just fine, but couldn't get them back in?

I also have the factory gauge and the trans cooler, I have pulled my side in camper 3500 lbs and my boat 3500 up snoqualmie pass in wa during the summer and it was 98 degrees and the trasmission was running about 200 most of the time, i think it got up to 210 when it was floorboarded for 10 minutes straight. I dont baby my truck, thats what a warranty is for.

I don't know what a "Derale" tranny pan is, but did you try a swivel socket?

I blew the OD sprag/clutch out of my '00 3/4 ton Savana 4L80E-I would NEVER, EVER tow in overdrive with one-that little sucker's only about 1/2 inch thick, chewed all the teeth off it.-:t
