I have a 2004 D/A LLY 2500HD which I got 2/27. Today, 3/1, I was backing out of the garage, it barely fits <g>, with my foot on the brake to avoid wacking the mirrors when I heard a grinding sound coming from what sounds like the rear brakes. Is this a "take to the shop" noise or a normal breaking-in noise? I've got an appointment to take it into the shop, but since this is my first diesel, I'm not sure which noises are good or bad. Has anyone else had this problem or have suggestions?
Thanks,
Celtic Garnet

Right after I wash it I'll get some brake rotor grind .... I wouldn't sweat it chalk it up to the pads cutting in a bit as long as it dissapears with peddle pressure ....

Although I love my GM trucks I have never been happy with the brakes. I have the same problem as the above post. Wet GM brakes grind.

Mac, I tried your suggestion, and yes, the grinding stops with pressure, but the truck stops as well. I'm getting a vibration through the brake pedal now as well. I hope that I'll have a better idea after the shop sees it. I'll post back the results.
Maynard, I didn't have wet brakes when this started, but they had been wet the day before, so I don't know if wetness is the problem.
I appreciate ya'lls responses.
Thanks,

You might want to check and see if a small rock became wedged in between the breaks and the wheel, it does happen.

The dampness will let a fine layer of rust cover the rotors and the first use could be what u hear.
The rotors aren't broke-in yet either, still have machine marks in them, so this could cause the noise too.

Wrong! Take it in. A vibration is not normal at any time. Later! Frank

Hi all,
Found out at the shop that the rotors needed to be turned because rocks had gotten in them. They also told me that the rotors needed to be broken in. There is still a little bit of noise left at 1600 miles but they are about broken in. Still loving the truck and would not trade it for anything http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.

Mine have always groaned a little bit when backing up with the brakes dragging (inclined driveway) wet or dry. They are smooth as glass going frontwards, no pulsing, no squeaks, good stopping power.
