Yesterday my service 4wd came on, on the DIC. I drove to dinner (15 miles) it sat for about an hour then drove back home. When i started the truck to drive home, the warning came on and there were not any lights on, on the 4wd buttons. I then stopped for fuel right by my house, restarted and the message was gone and the lights were lit. Any ideas? Should I worry about it? The truck has 43k on it, btw.

4WD switch most likely. It's a common problem. Unless it comes up again I wouldn't worry about it. If it comes up again take it to the dealer and they should know what it is (most likely that switch) and replace it.

I had the same thing happen to me right before Christmas except my switch indicator lights did not come on and I could not engage my truck into 4WD. If this happens to you again try this before taking your truck to the stealer! Go to your under the hood fuse box ( make sure your ignition is in the off position! ) and remove the "TREC" fuse, count off sixty seconds and re-install the fuse. Turn on the ignition, all the indicator lights should flash, the the 2WD indicator light should go on and remain that way. It worked for me and all is normal again. Beats buying a new switch or an $800.00 encoder motor.

Thanks everyone for your input so far. Hopefully it isn't the encoder motor...but I do have warranty until 100k!

Mine has been coming on every few weeks for the last 6 months . If I hit any of the fuctions on the DIC it goes off for another few weeks . Haven't lost 4x4 that I know of.

Xam- Whoever quoted you 800 for that encoder motor, was trying to shaft you hard...On my workorder it said it was about 350+-.
PLM-Do you have an extended warranty to cover up til 100k?
Ticki2- If it says service 4wd, youve more than likely lost 4wheel peel. Ive found out more than once when ive needed it...Hitting a DIC button, just clears it from the screen..

Your problem is more than likely the switch. I had the same problem in my 2002 Chevy and it did NOT get better. In fact it got worse as time went on. In my case, all the lights would start flashing and eventually the Service 4WD light would come on. Once the dealer replaced the switch I never had the problem again.

Not sure what you mean by 4wheel peel ?
I had that problem with my 99 1/2 ton GMC. I think the switch was 80 bucks plus labor at the dealer. After popping out the dash panel and removing the switch. I carefully lifted up all the plastic clips holding the switch together. Once inside I cleaned the contacts with a pencil eraser and found the solder joints were also cracked. I re-flowed them a soldering iron and snapped back together. The whole job runs about 15 minuets. Better than new and a total cost of FREE!

I take it, that this only a problem with pushbutton 4x4 & not with shifter on the floor.
Eric has encoder motor sensors for $85
