: Washing a Dmax engine?

Okay, this is my first diesel in quite awhile and the last one didn't have anywhere near the number of electronic control devices this one's got.

So my question is, can you wash them at the car wash?

I've washed engines on cars, trucks and airplanes for a long time, but there are some areas you don't want to get carried away on. I've already seen the warning on the Bosch control module about not "jet washing", and I've spotted the ECM. Is the other stuff safe to use the car wash wand on?

I ususally do it in the morning and go to a nearby car wash so the engine doesn't get too warm, ususally just use hot water, and start them right afterwards to help dry out the water left in the cracks and crevices, anything wrong with that approach?

Thanks

They don't let you wash it at the firehouse? Or is fire station the PC term in your neck of the woods?

I use low pressure water only, occasionally some "Gunk," soap and sponge ....The key is to keep up on cleaning regiment, regularly ....

Works great ....

Hmm....

I'll have to ask one of THEM.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Most of us just call them "Stations". Yes we do the car wash thing and it's one of the things I'll miss when I retire. But they took away the pressure washers due to the over exuberance of a new guy and the electronics on the fire engines......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

So in the past, I've found that if I do it on a regular basis, just plain hot water from the wash wand at the car wash will usually keep things in good shape.

Seems like most problems are associated with the wire loom connections not being waterproof like they are on the airplanes, but I didn't know how water tight the control modules would be. I burned up the electronic ignition control module on a 442 I had years ago because it got wet inside. I don't think the General will buy me any new parts if they fail and are wet inside.

Thanks for the input Mac, I was hoping for one of the techs to give me some idea of what's water sensitive under the hood, but I guess not...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Everything electrical is sensitive to pressurized water. Mac has the right idea, low pressure, don't spray directly at connectors.
