I've been on this cite for 3 days now & I've learned a lot from everyone:ro) With this cite who needs a mechanic when this cite has thousands. I've decided on purchasing a '01 D-Max. What do I need to look for when purchasing this vehicle? What's too many miles? What's the average price?:help:

Personally, I would try to buy an '02 with under 100k miles. When I bought mine a year ago, I didn't notice that much of a price difference, but the '01s are running out of factory warranty. I've used my warranty twice and both times were typical problems and covered with no questions asked. Now all the bugs are worked out (hopefully), and thanks to this site, I am more familiar with the D-Max, so I am a little more comfortable without the warranty. I paid 23k for mine with 80k miles.IMO I would stay away from anything drastically altered. Hope I helped in some way and good luck.

Have somebody run the vin # to look at the past service history. It would be helpful to see if it has the original injectors, and or any other major repairs.

I've got an '01 also. Here's what I've found so far that bugged me:

1. Lots of cold air coming in from the passanger side.
2. Injectors went out. Don't worry they're covered for 7 years.
3. Pain in the ass to get gid of the speed and rev limiter(thanks Westers and Max Power)

That's about it for me so far.

I am also intending to buy a diesel pickup and maybe a 3/4 ton or 1 ton duramax x-tended cab, longbed to put an Alaskan camper weighing 1900 lbs. I have my eye on a 02 duramax diesel. In my research of that year and the previous year I would recommend you check on the fuel injector situation. As someone said previously if under warranty you may be able to get them replaced by the dealer. They seem to have definitely been a problem and require the new and improved fuel injectors. You don't want to get stuck with the bill unless well compensated for the chance. Also I have heard of a possible problem with a transmission seal leak. The one I am looking at is priced at 27000 several months ago but I think now it may be available for 25000 or less. The Kelly Blue Book will give a starting point for discussions. Also be sure to run the VIN number with Car Fax or some resource to find if that particular vehicle has any nasty history of wrecks, recalls, etc. that you should know about. I am going to pay 75 to 100 to have whatever diesel pickup I find checked out by a reputable diesel mechanic. Good Luck, I am in almosty the same boat.

MY 01 has 160K miles.
Injectors (twice)
One Transmission sensor
I'm doing head gaskets now.

Would I buy the same truck again? Yes.

There was around 65000Km on the truck when the injectors went out.

I love my '01. I have 170k miles now and it runs and drives like it has 50k. Had the injectors replaced at 100k miles under warranty. It is a great truck. I get far less driver fatigue in that truck than I do in my wifes '03 Tahoe Z71. As long as you keep up on the preventative maintenance and fluid and filter changes, it won't let you down.
