Hey all...I did a search and can't find any specific info on a problem a friend is having.

He has a 2500HD with a self-locking rear diff. His right tire is wearing out much faster (almost twice as fast) as his left. I told him that i thought the locking mechanism is gone in the diff.

What do you think?

TIA!!!

Hey Mod's....could you move this to "Ask the Techs"? Evidently this is the wrong spot for this question!

Ok, I think you would have received more views and advice in the other section. Let me know. I can always move it back..

Does he try to spin out a lot on take offs? If so I would think the locking differential is working properly. One tire that has better traction doesn't spin, while the other does spin and is burning the tread off of the tire.

Sorry, I'm not a tech so I probably shouldn't have provided my opinion.

Any kind of wear pattern? Saw tooth, more in the center, more on the edges or flat across?

Flat across and he is running bone stock!! And he doesn't spin the tires on purpose. He tows a 9000 pound boat all summer long and it just wore the right tire out.

I had a 2500HD with a locking diff before the dually, and the rear tires on that always wore even. And I was towing with 1.25 ton in the bed and 3 ton in tow.

Are you sure his truck has the locker diff option?

I know I am not a tech, but does he have teenage kids?

How often does he rotate his tires?

Yep...for sure on the locker option, Cobra!

No teenage kids and wife won't drive it.

He rotates every 10K miles.

Little update...we had a severe melt-off and he lives on a dirt road so it got down to gravel instead of the packed snow. He took it out on the road and nailed the throttle. He said he left two very even tracks and they seemed to be even in depth. Would this be a good test or should I have him do a dry pavement launch?

Crazy :
I have seen this before , If he has two different sized tires on the rear the lock will allways be engaged , so what happens is one wheel is being literlly slide down the road. Measure the outside diamater of each tire .

Hmmmmm...I'll check that out puffer! Because I know for sure that the right rear is slighly smaller in diameter than the left just by looking at the tread that is left.
