: The Hazards of mudflaps on a dually
Duallyvette 02-27-2004, 11:51 PM I had put some husky mudflaps on both my duallys to cut down on the debris flying up on the paint. Could there possibly be a downside? Well today I found a downside. I backed into a small snow pile. The snow used the the mudflap as a lever and BUSTED my fenders.
In 20 years of dually ownership, this is my 1st damaged fender. Has anyone else had this happen? I believe a dually fender use to cost a couple of hundred. Now with this one piece plastic bed side I'll bet its expensive. Anyone know how much?Edited by: Duallyvette
JRZ2500HD 02-28-2004, 12:04 AM Well I know my dad pulled his off when he backed up to a curb and the tire took it right off. But at least the flap went and not the fender. At least you are getting to use the plow with all that snow.
Duallyvette 02-28-2004, 12:48 AM Yea... my life . Make a dollar spend 4k.
The mudflap is still on the fender. It just cracked the plastic fenders in about 5 places, and poped the side marker lights out.Edited by: Duallyvette
John R 02-28-2004, 12:59 AM The only thing you are going to like about this is it's easy to change the box side. I changed so many of them at the factory I could do it in an hour.
Cost wise it's hard to tell, look at everything GM sells!
john@dps 02-28-2004, 01:31 AM the price for the fender is 1400.00 and a color match from any good shop is 500.00. california prices, where you live could be less

Max Power 02-28-2004, 04:02 AM I've seen whole brand new dually box's on ebay for well under $1000. Tailgates, tail lights, the whole works. If you get luck you might even find the right color. What color is your truck? I'll keep my eye out.
Max Power 02-28-2004, 04:09 AM Here is one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2462238991&category=33 655
Duallyvette 02-29-2004, 12:57 PM Well, this truck is Black. I could try to find a bed closer than Memphis / Oklahoma ( the ebay link ). I'm thinking that a better idea would be to install a wrecker bed of some type, although I think the stock bed looks better. I don't know how I could prevent this happening again the next time I'm plowing snow in about 3 years.(snow is rare here in Charlotte NC.) I'm just sick about this. I think these fenders are just too fragil and a warning about installing mudflaps should come with the truck.
Any tow bed suggestions?
McRat 02-29-2004, 01:08 PM Have you tried to go to bodyshop that does vettes and other fiberglass cars yet? Maybe it can be fixed.
I'm not sure you could do anything except mount the flaps with some fasteners that shear easily. Or perforate the top of the flap. When the tire hits a flap in reverse with something behind it, it can apply huge amounts of torque to the flap. Even a steel bed would give.

whiteeye42 03-01-2004, 12:10 AM i had the4 same thing happen to my fender from the mud flaps but i did not back into anything a semi on the interstate flipped a chunck of old tire and it hit my mubflag and broke the fender and pulled all the bolts out of the inner fender and $1700.00 later it was like brand new fiberglass repair will not work on the fender for some reason the fiberglass will not stick also make sure before they prime it that they sand it alittle to open the pores of the fender and then they have to bake it and then wipe it down before spraying it then they have to bake it again or the paint will peel off i know this for a fact because i have had both rear fender replace and each time they had to do it over because they forgot to sand and bake it before painting itEdited by: whiteeye42
Duallyvette 03-01-2004, 01:14 AM We had 12 to 17 inches of snow, just backing up in it and I cracked both my fenders. I wonder it they could survive a snow without the mudflaps? I really liked the mudflaps, I guess that I need to take them off of both my duallys. These panels SUCK. I sure would like to hear from everyone that has had fender failure.

I had some mudflaps on my last dually (93) and the mudflaps mounted to a piece of angle iron bracket that bolted to the frame rail. And when i backed into some deep mud it pinched the mudflap but only the bracket bent. The fender was still ok. Maybe you could make up a bracket like that.
I dont know what will happen with the new dually since the mud flap bolts to the fender. Only way to avoid it getting pinched in snow or mud is to leave it off or cut it shorter so it wont get pinched. Theres only a few screws that hold it on so take it off next time.
The truck can survive a few storms without the mudflaps.
dmaxscott 03-01-2004, 12:56 PM I have a 02 dually and this weekend I noticed a crack behind the pass side dually abot 1 to 2 foot long.
I am off to the dealer to see what they can do. 46k on miliage of course.
jbh2000 03-01-2004, 03:46 PM The bare fender runs about $750. Of course, after the labor and paint, you're looking at around 17-1800.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Don't know about the rest of the world, but the flaps are mandated by law down here in Texas...but we don't have to worry too much about snow.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
