: Fuel tank filler size
realbigfoot 02-27-2004, 10:34 PM Hey Guys picked up my Duramax/ally yesterday and tonight while looking things over I looked up from underneath at the fuel filler hose and saw a external vent hose - 1" - that hooks into the filler pipe very near the top. So I looked into the filler neck after opening the door and removing the tank cap and that "baby" Has a 1 1/4" hole for the fill nozzle!!!
Maybe GM is listening???
Fueling up at the "big boys" pumps should not be a problem.

I tried it for the first time at a big nozzle high flow pump today. Worked great except it overflowed when I tried to top it off. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
dmaxer 02-28-2004, 07:44 AM Noticed the same in my new 04, but haven't tried the high-volume pumps yet. Could sure be an advantage when pulling a 30 foot trailer in crowded drives. It is a whole lot easier to get into the truck pumps.
Dave Lewis 02-28-2004, 08:31 AM Does it look like it would fit the older models?
NoWake200 02-28-2004, 10:17 AM '04 LB7......$130 to get the filler from TransferFlow!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
LLY owners enjoy the new filler from the factory.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
dmaxer 02-28-2004, 01:21 PM My 04 is an LB7 and it has the the large opening. Manufacture date 10-03-03.
JDTRIP 02-28-2004, 01:46 PM I have an 04 LB7 and the nozzle of the big pumps fits just fine. you just have to pump slower because of the high pressure of those pumps. I use them all the time.
Dura_Mike 02-28-2004, 02:05 PM I just checked my '04 GMC (build: 10/23-03) and it has the larger fuel pipe opening. It looks like this is another unannounced improvement on all '04's. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Fin-Addict 02-28-2004, 08:58 PM I haven't tried the big nozzel yet but I think I have the bigger filler neck too. This is my first diesel so I'm not sure but I do know that it's twice the size of my old gas filler neck. truck is an '04 LB7 build 11/03.
04wanabemax 02-28-2004, 09:09 PM The large style nozzels used for big trucks work great on the new 04's, but just as with the small nozzels you can't seem to top these trucks off without having it run down the side of the truck.
Don't know if they would fit the older trucks for sure, but one can assume they do as I believe some of the repalcement tanks I have seen are supposed to work on the 04's also.
Just my .02 Fran
realbigfoot 02-28-2004, 09:17 PM Fueled her up today and set the big noozle about half flow and was full in about 2 min. then gave her another squirt and could see the fuel in the fill hose - didn't get any on the truck!
I don't know if the filler will work on older trucks as you need a seperaye vent connection on the tank to hook the hose to????
mnstr_fx 02-28-2004, 11:04 PM Anyone have a picture of the "new" vent line? From what was said in a previous post, the true "fix" isn't supposed to be out for a while. I have a LB7 '04 and was wondering if this is a band-aid for the big pump problem ....
NoWake200 02-29-2004, 09:27 AM I wounder if you guys are not noticing the pressed restrictor that is down in the filler about a 3"s or so. My LB7 9/03 build date has a big filler opening but it is restricted further down the hole.(might not be a bad idea when it comes to holes, but for fueling is sucks).
Also the rear differential's vent tub runs to the top of the filler hose. Might mistaking that for a fill vent for the tank. I DID WHEN I BOUGHT IT!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
realbigfoot 02-29-2004, 08:31 PM I can look 10"-12" down the filler and there is no restrictor bushing in sight! And it is hard to belive that the rear diff. is vented with a 1" hose!!
Checked under the truck and there is a small (1/4) line also hooked into the filler - looks like the vent from the rear end!Edited by: realbigfoot
Mr. Mister 03-02-2004, 11:25 AM I'm sorry you LB7 guys don't have a large filler tubehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
I have put 2 tanks in my truck so far and it's great being able to use whatever pump I want.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif FYI, I haven't had any overfill problems!
dmaxer 03-02-2004, 07:42 PM You don't understand, we do have it!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
I really feel sorry for you guys with the latest and greatest LLY's having to limp around on 300HP. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
ShumDit 03-02-2004, 09:12 PM I've an 02. I've used the truck stations w/their big nozzles ~ I'm wondering if there would be a real improvement over what I have and experience? Yes, there is foaming and spitting that requires my attention (and normally signs in the area advising you are responsible for costs of fuel that spills if nozzles don't stop while you are away) but I take that as the nature of the fuel. Diesel is detergent and foams ~ not as bad as guiness dark but wondering if modifying to a larger filler is the ans?
CMC-GMC 03-02-2004, 09:38 PM Can someone post or show me pictures of the difference between large openings and small opening on the fuel tank opening?
From the sounds of it my LB7 04 is the big opening...
I've not used a big truck stop yet but would like to know if I can before I get in a pinch.

Majuba Max 03-02-2004, 10:14 PM i fill up with a comm nozzle but its slow becuase of the restictor in it i would like to know if it can be removed Edited by: Majuba Max

sycloneGuy 03-03-2004, 11:30 AM Don't know if this is on all 04's or not. Mine was built the first week of January. I don't see any restriction in the fill hole. Havent tried the big boy's pump yet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/Vent_Hose.JPG

Lol, ya it will be nice when there is a programmer available for the LLY
Dave Lewis 03-03-2004, 04:35 PM Is this the big one? I'm assuming it is the small one since there is no 1" line to the filler. It looks so big thoughhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/3BF_filler.jpg Edited by: Dave Lewis
Fin-Addict 03-03-2004, 04:47 PM Just looked at mine, and now I see the difference.....I have the small one like pictured above!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Dave Lewis, your's is the small one. It's large right at the opening but look how it tapers down where the vent holes are!! The large nozzel will only go up to those vent holes.

Dave Lewis 03-03-2004, 07:33 PM That stinks. I'm assuming the tank is different between nozzle sizes. Will a new new tank fit the older models? And how much do you think one would be?
