: Duramax Gas Mileage?
Taco Bender 02-27-2004, 03:27 PM OK Im on my 4th day with my 2004 Duramax GMC Sierra 4x4 and I love it :) I'm curious out there what yall are getting on MPG?
If you could send me a reply and let me know + how many miles you have on it. Im curious how many miles til mine is broke in. A couple of yrs?
McRat 02-27-2004, 03:30 PM 377mi = 12.7mpg. Lots of city driving. Lead filled right boot.
conradv 02-27-2004, 03:37 PM I don't put gas in mine but.....
as far as diesel fuel mileage, I am averaging 18 (computated by hand) after 37,000 miles in my '03 Crew Cab Long Box.
Taco Bender 02-27-2004, 03:38 PM I bought my truck 700 miles away and drove it back.. I was LOVING it all the way back.. I was getting 16mpg & that was averg about 80mph.. Hopefully this is good things to come. I would love to add some 285's on the truck but afraid Im gonna mess up the smooth ride and gas mileage
Fin-Addict 02-27-2004, 04:02 PM GAS milage is GREAT!! I don't use ANY!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I do go through some diesel every now and then though!!...19mpg highway...14.5 around town.

T.P.N. 02-27-2004, 10:40 PM First year, total of 17,000 miles, my average according to my DIC (I always go by what my DIC tells me . . . .http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif ), was 17.8 mpg, 50/50, city/hwy. Edited by: T.P.N.
Victory Red 02-27-2004, 11:39 PM 03 Crew 2500HD, 21,500 miles lifetime average is 18.7. Summer I get around 19.5 winter a little over 16 on average.
deadfurrow 02-28-2004, 01:58 AM I've had my '04 LB7 for about three weeks now. I've got 4800 miles on it so far, & the last 5 tankfuls have ranged from 18.2 to 18.78. That's hand calculated & GPS corrected with 265 tires running about 70 to 75 mph on the highway with occasional city driving. I'm curious to know if it will improve much when it finally warms up enough to not need the winter blend fuel. The DIC is actually reading about .5 to 1 MPG too low most of the time.

Lets try this again
you'll have to get out of the city more.
Jon S 02-28-2004, 09:46 AM I have had my '04 LB7 for about 3 months. 7,200 miles. Bone stock. 70% highway, 30% city, no towing. Best tank = 21.54, Worst tank = 19.02, Lifetime average = 20.28 MPG (computed by hand).
NoWake200 02-28-2004, 10:10 AM Dmaxcan,
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif that was the milage from St. Louis to Indy.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
That was also the time I was using the Stanadyne additve, it flet like I had a parachute behind me the entire trip. My last fillup on the way home the tank was on empty and noticed a change as I was getting on the highway. But it still never left the 14.0 to 14.3 range.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
My truck seems to have lost power from the day I picked it up with 15miles on it...now with 4,000miles it really does not seem to be the same truck.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

MaxFarmer 02-28-2004, 10:35 AM No wake: Are you adjusting for your different tire size as well? I know when I put larger tires on my mpg dropped odometerwise, but you have to consider that your speedo is about 7mph or so off at highway speeds....that adds up in a hurry! I dont know how to factor out the difference to get my "true" mpg....but Ive been getting about 15-16 "supposedly". I was right at 20 before the larger tires....
Jason
NoWake200 02-28-2004, 11:04 AM No, I am not....I think the Attitude/Juice will do that for me? Does it?
I know the Hypertech will ask about the tire size.
sfischer 02-28-2004, 12:15 PM Here's a good site for those of you thinking about changing tire sizes.
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp
MaxFarmer 02-28-2004, 02:01 PM The juice and attitude will correct your mph ON THE ATTITUDE DISPLAY. It doesnt change your factory speedo or odometer. So even if you know how fast you're going with the attitude monitor, your pickup still only thinks you're going slower than you actually are...less miles are accumulated therefore less mpg. Also, less miles on the odometer!
Jason
With 9975 miles, I am getting around 18 country/city driving. Highway is around 19.2 MPG. Bone stock with pre OEM Cat filter. Running Florida diesel fuel, not sure if it is winter blended or not.
T.P.N. 02-28-2004, 02:13 PM Winter blend . . . . in Florida??? What's that, a little extra Cuervo Gold in the Marguerita??? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Diesel Dragon 02-28-2004, 03:11 PM NoWake 200,
If your only getting 14 gpm thats a lot of fuel burned up. probablly 2.5 miles per tankfull.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
You better go to dealer to see what's wrong you should be getting atleast 14 mpg.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
And I think i read on another thread where someone said to multiply your miles on the odometer by .075 and add that to your miles to get your true miles driven when you put 265 tires on. I think.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
And never trust you DIC when you put a power adder like juice on because it reads much higher mpg wise then your actually getting. Even stock my DIC was showing about .5 to 1 mpg more than i was actually getting.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
Bye Diesel Dragon http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

NewEnglandDmax 02-28-2004, 05:11 PM I get around 18-20 i n summer unloaded. In winter I average about 13-15 and that is with 300lbs sand in bed.
20K miles, 35" tires and the juice avg in town about 15. highway at 75 -85 i can see 17 - 18, all hand computed. these are winter numbers, i can see a shade more in summer but a/c usually eats into it.

Frank Blum 02-28-2004, 06:24 PM My average for 36K non towing miles is 18.61. Later! Frank http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
kbstinky 02-28-2004, 07:05 PM Had the beast for 2 years on Jan 1st.
Commute driving 7 miles, average around 14.5 to 15.5.
Towing a 12K 5th wheel, 10.5 to 12.5, depending on how much hill climbing I do.
On the highway empy I have gotten up to 19.
Not as good as some, but look at the size of my 9100 lb truck.
If ya love it, the mpg don't matter.
Happy driviing.
14.5-15 in town, 20-22 on the freeway with 285s and Juice Level 5--unless I put my foot in it too much.........................

dutch 02-28-2004, 10:57 PM I get anywhere from 13 to 16 MPG.
Now my truck weighs close to 10,000lbs. I recently added a toolbox made out of 3/16 steel. Strong enough to set a pallet with 50-50lbs bags on it. Actually got my best milage on the last tank. Juice on three I got 360 unadjusted miles out of it. But it was mostly highway miles, some pulling a trailer.
Went coyote hunting/chasing today with my son. 50 mph thru soft sand and mud. Had a blast. Truck just wont quit, keeps on pulling. My old 2000 one ton with the 454 would bog down all the time doing the same thing. The Duramax can be going 40 mph and when you floor it all tires will spin! Can't have anything on the dash or in the dash cubby hole, it will fall out when accellerating.
Now it needs washed. Badly.
SpoolinTurbo 02-29-2004, 02:09 AM 3000 miles on the truck. I get 15-16 in the city, and 21-22 highway, unloaded, with the tailgate down doin 65. It goes down to 15 mpg if I do 75... CC SB D/A 4x4
CRUSHER 02-29-2004, 03:20 AM Just made a trip to Memphis pulling a dual axle trailer (empty one way and carrying a 3500 lb.car coming back). Truck is bone stock. Average speed was 60 mph. on cruise. Averaged 18.0 mpg.! I love this truck.----------------Phil
Kartattack 02-29-2004, 08:42 PM Today I got the best mileage so far (11K on truck). From Abilene to Fort Worth, Quad on 90 HP, tail wind, empty truck, I got 21.05 MPG running 75MPH most of the way (DIC showed 22.3?). The same stretch in the opposite direction on Friday with 1/2 ton of grain in the bed I got 17.4 MPG (DIC showed 18.4). Stock tires. I need to run downhill with a tail wind more often!

My Dad use to have a 1981 Olds Delta 88 with the famous 5.7 diesel. We ran a lot between west Texas and north central Texas. Coming out here it would always use a full tank. Going thataway it would not even use 3/4 of a tank. We are a lot higher outhere and the wind mostly blows from a westerly direction.
Kartattack 02-29-2004, 11:23 PM Dutch:
Yup, that wind seems to blow out of the west steadily...20MPH on a calm day. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
Still, I've never done better than 18.5 before. So, either it was an exceptionally windy day, or my mileage picked up on the 90 HP setting. I've never run it long enough before to tell. The 50 HP tune didn't seem to change mileage much.
shrubber 03-01-2004, 01:16 AM I have only had mine for about 1 1/2 months, but get 17 around local area. I have gotten 20.3 while driving it home from Texas -- at 75mph!

Kartattack 03-01-2004, 07:23 AM Petty dang good, Shrubber. I get about average mileage, some lucky ones like you do quite a bit better. Mine isn't all right foot related since it's on CC during all my highway mileage.
john@dps 03-01-2004, 08:10 PM i'm with dutch, mine weights almost 9000 lb's and i get 13 to 14 all the time i live in l.a. though.

StraitDiesel 03-01-2004, 10:40 PM I've got an 04' reg cab 8ft bed 2500HD 4x4 with the LB7 (not fair, I want the lly) I've had it for a week and a half and I put about 800 miles on it, two tanks of DIESEL FUEL, I got 15.7MPG on each tank... hopefully with the reg cab (less weight) it will eventually get better gas mileage... while I am posting, how long should I let it sit running after I get done driving to let the DMAX and turbo cool down?
Redapple 03-01-2004, 11:12 PM These turbos are far more modern than just 10 years ago. You don't need to let them wind down, or cool down. Let it idle for about 30 to 40 sec then shut her down.

Depends on how hard you were driving it. If you live in town and are piddling around at 35 mph I would just stop and shut it off.
But if you're like me I live on a county road where we drive maybe 65 or 70. When I come in from running like that I let it cool at least a minute.
Bugsy 03-03-2004, 02:59 PM I picked up a new Duramax in August 2003, now have 12,000kms and have been getting 23 mpg (hand calculated). That's Canadian Miles and Canadian gallons! We should do all our calculations in liters per 100 km. and fuel prices in Canadian dollars, that would mess up most of this forum. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
I'm getting 20 mpg (imperial) around town and 15 mpg pulling a 6,000 lb trailer, a lot of hills in BC and nobody passes me. That's 25 -30% better than my 95 Yukon got, both city and pulling, and everyone passed me. I've never been on a long trip out of town without the trailer long enough to see what kind of milage I can get on the Highway.
