it was my understanding that the 6.2 is externaly balanced with the flywheel. however while doing research for an engine swap two people said that its the harmonic balancer that is how the 6.2 is balanced.

here is what i'm working on and i don't want to break the crank shaft or have other troubles;

'68 M715 w/

6.2 diesel from a cucv

3053A OD tranny from a duece and half

NP205 divoreced

Dana60/coperate14B 4.56gears 38"tires

anyway, can you all confirm if the 6.2 has a balanced flywheel or can i use other flywheels and its the harmonic balancer i need to worrie about.

thanks

I believe the 6.2 uses balanced flywheels and flexplates, and they are different then the gas engine versions.

I am not sure about the harmonic balancer, that may be balanced as well. I know if you have any broke rubber or rubber missing, might as well replace it now.

All 6.2's and 6.5's are externally balanced. The balancer is weighted as is the flywheel. Get a single mass flywheel from a 6.2 or a late 6.5 and you will be set. Avoid the dual mass flywheel that was used in the early 90's on the 6.5.;)

good to know both are balanced.

whats wrong with the dual mass flywheels?

Warwick, you might want to contact spicergear over at www.steelsoldiers.com about your conversion. He has already put a 6.2 in a 715... and he isnt 'that' far from you :-)

thanks for the help. i will keep looking for a 6.2 or late 6.5 flywheel. i have the 3053A and a line on a cheap 6.2, need to gather all the parts to bolt them together. i've talked with spicer but just about the basics until i have the diesel & tranny in my shop.

i know of another guy planning to put the same set-up in his M725[ambulence] but he is planning on using a 13" clutch and flywheel. what problems will using a non 6.2 balanced flywheel cause? thanks again

scarry part.......
I've taken 3 engines apart, an 82 6.2, a 93 6.5, and a 94 6.5. All the balance weights on all 3 flywheels are noticeably different, yet the harmonic balancers are the same except for the length difference to make up for the reluctor wheel for the 94 and up electronic trucks.

I thought for sure the 93 and 94 engines would have the same flywheel, guess i need to check part numbers.
