I want to copy the stock tune out of my wife's Sierra and play around with it without actually tuning it yet. I'm not sure if I want to tune it or not, but I'd like to play around with it.

Can I back up a factory tune without using (wasting) a license on the vehicle?

Yes. You can do anything you like to it except write it back to the truck. If you write it back you lose a licence.

That's right, read as many vehicles as you wish, scan as many vehicles as you wish, only when you attempt to program will you use a license.

You will need to use a license only when you attempt to flash the program into the vehicle's PCM for the first time.
