: squeeling could be clutch??

The last couple of days I've noticed a squeeling noise usually under light throttle conditions from about 1200 RPM to 1700 RPM. I first thought that it was a boost leak, but it doesn't change with boost pressure. It always sounds the same when it happens no matter if boost is 2psi or 8 psi. I then thought it was an accessory making noise so I removed the serpentine belt. This changed nothing with the sound. I've come to the conclusion that it's a drivetrain related noise because it only does it at the above mentioned RPM's and usually under light throttle. It does it worst just after a shift too. I've never heard of a clutch squeeling, but with this DMF crap I figure anything is possible. The clutch does rattle at an idle and during engagment on occasion, but has never slipped noticably. (never jumped 100 or more RPM suddenly) You guys have any thoughts on this?

Hey Dieseldummy, I was reading your post and my '03 started out squealing with the clutch engaged at about 8K miles, the only noise it made at the time. Took it to the dealer and had them replace the clutch and flywheel, then the squeal started again about 2 weeks later. Then the squeal quit, now I have the grinding noise when the clutch is pressed and released at idle. Other than that, it's doing okay. You gotta be really smooth with the shift change to kinda work around the grind, without letting it lug down before pushing the clutch in. DMF at stock form really has issues, it was the second dealer before we got any help at all and we're on our second clutch/third flywheel. Waiting to save up money for the new Southbend clutch system. That's working out good.... :lol:

Well at least I'm not the only one. I just hadn't read about squealing before, just grinding and rattling. I'm savin' up for the Southbend too...

Hey DD sounds like the pilot bearing in the DMF. Is the noise more of a chirp chirp or is it consistant? I had this issue on one of my previous DMF...so many I can't remember! Especially if it is occuring during the engaugement of the clutch. Keep on saving and we can solve all your problems!!

It's a consistant noise when it happens. I started doing it when it got really cold out and has been doing it on and off lately. I'm saving, just got to get through x-mas and such...

Hey DD the kit is in my truck and working great so far!!! Keep on saving it is well worth it! I would still say pilot is bad. It is very cheap bearing that GM puts in the DMF. One of mine completely fell apart when we took out the DMF.

I got a little carried away chasing a critter a couple nights ago and the noise vanished... I think I'm going to try and wait for the single disk unit, sounds more like my type.

dieseldummy;
your description is simlar to many posts, and my experience, with DMF problems. Once the DMF starts to fail it impacts the slave cylinder,pilot bearing, clutch (slipping) and the pedal (hard). The DMF is crap. There have been posts on this forum about the same problems since it started. I had a poll quite a wile ago and 72% of ZF6 guys had DMF problems. I bet more of them have since then. One guy had the DMF replaced 11 times !!!!

BTW, are you up around Greeley/Ft. Collins?

Deadeye, I figured that my noise was the DMF causing problems. The noise went away eventually, I would still like to get a good clutch in before the DMF trashes everything else. Just saving my pennies... I'm out here in Sterling.
