Put the truck in Reverse and run around to the back, you'll find it  do not forget to apply the parking brake first or if not call 911 . But do like I did install a switch on it so its there when needed ( like right after runnig into or over something or one ) just joking, put with the noise your insurance company like the fact you have one.

FYI the beeper is DOT required equipment on trucks above a given weight. I forget the number, maybe as high as >26,000. It is also an OSHA violation for it to be disabled on a job site, but I never got called on that one.

I had mine on a switch so I could turn it on for the inspector. I did this when I wired an idiot light in the cab for reverse.

Just so you know.

all of our company vehicles for contruction have the beepers. o/t but one time we had this really old dumptruck for hauling scrap and such had no reverse lights or back up horn so i wired the backup horn and backup lights into the head lights. the inspector would be around back never notice the headlights comming on when he asked for reverse

Fingers I do not recall a Dot law on back up alarms and a search of the dot web site returns no hits for such a law. It is not a standered Item on a yearly Fed inspection. It could be a state law in some states

OSHA does have a regulation

..1926.601(b)(4)

1926.601(b)(4)

No employer shall use any motor vehicle equipment having an obstructed view to the rear unless:

1926.601(b)(4)(i)

The vehicle has a reverse signal alarm audible above the surrounding noise level or:

1926.601(b)(4)(ii)

The vehicle is backed up only when an observer signals that it is safe to do so.

We serviced 5000 trucks and trailers at AE and none of them were equiped with a back up alarm.

Fire and Fleet ? 4 ya.

NFPA probably requires them too? We have them plus a mandatory backer here at work. The forest service won't allow us on a wildland fire without it either.

Hmmm, I don't see it in the fed code. I know it was on the inspector's check list here in PA. Wording was something like "obstructed view of rear/ audible alarm". Guess if you don't have a rear view mirror in the cab, your obstructed. :)

I have dealt with Monroe before (one of their shops is 10 miles from my house) If they put one on it had to be a requirement. I cant see them ever giving anything away.

Chtrucker,

They are a requirment on all fire trucks per NFPA code but not but dot code.

Note NFPA 1911-99 Section 11-12 Page 31 of 157 reads.

11-12 Backup Alarm. An electric or electronic backup alarm
shall be provided that meets the Type D (87 dBA) requirements
of SAE J994, Alarm — Backup — Electric, Laboratory Performance
Testing.

"I know it was on the inspector's check list here in PA" more like a state code or law

Thank you
