I am shopping for a 3500 Crew Cab 4X4. After looking thru threads I would want to purchase a LBZ. How can I identify the motor from the window sticker? Or is there another easier way (Besides asking the salesman who will probably make a very uneducated guess)

look in the glove box at the option code label it would say lbz on it.

Or you can look at the VIN. If the 8th digit is a "2" its an LLY. If the 8th digit is a "D" its an LBZ..

Yup.

Just look through the windshield in the lower corner of the drivers side and count over. The 8th digit is the engine code on every vehicle and the 10th is the model year.

The trucks I looked at said Duramax Diesel HO (high output) for the LBZ model.

If the sticker is on the window then the power will be quoted as 360hp and 650 ftlb for the LBZ. I just went through this as well and have a 06 LLY (as of monday). The air box and glove compartment are a way of double checking if the wrong sticker is hanging. When I drove both I could not tell the difference but my wallet could ($2500 vs $1000 rebate).

There is still a debate on this web site as to what the differences are between the LLY and LBZ in terms of actual parts and programming. I believe hardware wise they are the same based on looking under the hood of both and a 2004 LLY. 06LLY and LBZ look the same but very different to the 04 LLY
