I park my truck for the winter, How often should I start it. And can I just let it idle or should I hold the throdal down a bit to get the rev's up.

I try to run mine about once every other week. When I do run it, I try to take it out on a trip for longer that 20km, at highway speeds, to get everything warmed up and circulated. I also use the block heater on a timer of 4 hours a day.
