Hello all, I am a new user to this site, and also a first time diesel owner. I have a 2004 Chevy Duramax with the LLY engine. I just bought it used and it has 30,000 miles on it. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to switch to synthetic oil or not!! If so, what brand is everyone recommend? I have a LS1 that I use Mobil One Delvac in and was thinking of using it here also. Let me know what your thought are!! Thanks for the help!!

This topic has enough threads to fill the library of congress archives. Do a search and you will have more info about oil choices than you could ever imgaine. Congrats on the ride and welcome!

FWIW: I use Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 all year. Works great.

as was said search. Key point that it has the CI-4 or CH-4 rating. If in doubt go to http://eolcs.api.org/ and check it out. They are all fine and work fine. Not sure one is the "best". Amsoil dealers are free to disagree.

I have used Amsoil full synthetic since about 20,000 miles. I love it.

Figure out what temperature you will be running your oil, that will dictate the weight. As for grade, better not tow without synthetic, the oil is undercooled in this truck.

go to any truck stop in America and ask any trucker what they use. Shell rotella will likely be their answer. Almost any widely known oil will be just fine. your service interval is far more important than brand. find what works for you and stick with the same brand. Also, you arent going to wear out your truck any quicker using conventional oil vs synthetic.

No kidding? A member here recently measured oil temp at 340 degrees.

Still think synthetic has no advantage?
