YellaCat 12-18-2005, 10:10 AM has the "Duramax Universal Fuel Filter" that mounts under the hood where the second alternator would go. Seems like a pretty slick set-up, any reason not to go with it?

Is it because the filter size versus the Cat?
I've often thought it would be a great place as well, but no one sems to talk much about that versus the nicktane/cat set up. I will keep and eye on this thread as well.

You would never get a CAT filter to fit at that location. I run the Racor heated setup in the 2'nd alt. position and the filter just clears the power steering tank. Same idea as Greg's but you have a choice of filters with the universal setup. All secondary filter setups I've seen have their pros and cons and essentially do the same thing. It depends on what best suits your needs. Do a search, there's a ton of info that will help you decide whats best for your situation.
jholly 12-18-2005, 11:02 AM I home brewed a bracket and used a wix filter head. I mount a Baldwin BF7633 in the second alt. position. But with that, Greg makes some good stuff. I feel comfortable buying from him. He makes some really neat stuff.

I thought the major pro to this set up was you could run the smaller micron filter post oem filter that way they are working together in sequence rather than sending fuel through cheese cloth then through a chain link fence, so to speak.
YellaCat 12-18-2005, 12:08 PM The website is a little weak in the info department but it looks like a baldwin BF1224 should fit the universal kit which is around 4"x6". The Cat 1R0749 for the Nicktane kit is 3.75 x 10.5 . Definitely would be giving up some media area.

Using a smaller filter and comparing the media area to a larger filter doesn't mean it is any less efficient. Using a larger filter just means you change it less than the smaller ones. Most of the filters talked about on this site pretty much have the same effeciency rating when comparisons are made with regard to partical size being captured. Do a search under fuel filters and have a look at some of great discussions that have taken place on this site in the past, to help you decide what's best.
LTChip 02-08-2006, 12:22 AM I am looking at this one too. I think hooking up pre-OEM makes more practical sense in that you would change the 2 micron one more often and it is a PITA to change the OEM one. This way you could stretch your OEM changes to 20K or so.
Or am I thinking about this the wrong way?
Tsckey 02-08-2006, 06:02 PM I already have the Nicktane filter, so the question is academic for me. But, I intend to install the exhaust brake air pump in the second alternator position, which might be a consideration for others who are considering an E-brake in the future.

Iceman18T 02-08-2006, 06:34 PM The only thing that is a pain about the nicktane is repriming the system, especially if you don't have any diesel laying around to fill the filter 1st.
Snapper692 02-08-2006, 06:58 PM How about using a dual-filter setup, or just the single (either at the 2nd alt. location) and eliminating the factory filter? That filter in the factory location is a PITA to change!!
Bulldogger 02-08-2006, 07:36 PM I run Gregs set-up. So far 4000 trouble free miles. His system can be set-up post or pre-filter from the alternater mount position. Fast set up well worth the money. Dave
LTChip 02-08-2006, 11:01 PM I see that the Nicktane CAT filters are bigger so they'll last longer but 2 microns is 2 microns right? So the LS one should filter the same. Plumbing it pre-OEM and the fact that it is so accessable makes lots of sense to me.
LTChip 02-08-2006, 11:03 PM I also don't see any reason why plumbing a by-pass for the OEM filter would hurt anything with the LS system in place. You would loose the secondary filtration but the net would be a great gain over just the OEM.
LTChip 02-12-2006, 04:55 PM With the 2micron filter used in these LS units is it advisable to use a lift pump?
What lift pump would you guys suggest?
Frank Blum 02-15-2006, 12:15 AM Greg's Racor 660 assembly will easily fit in the second alternator area and so will the Cat. I have installed about a dozen 660 mounted to the A/C bracket. I had a Cat on a Permacool head for awhile but couldn't get it to hold a good enough prime. Later! Frank

That's why you keep a gas can full of diesel in your garage. It beats pumping that primer! When I installed my Nicktane, I filled the Cat filter first and started it right up. No priming at all.
jthomas82 02-15-2006, 10:15 PM I installed the Unit the Greg makes and it was a snap. I installed pre factory filter and it still only took about 30 minutes to install. I have about 2k after about two weeks of use. It came with a Baldwin 2 micron filter that can be picked up just about anywhere.
noreaster 02-15-2006, 10:21 PM That filter in the factory location is a PITA to change!!
You must be doing it wrong, I can do mine in 15 minutes.
hotdmax05 02-15-2006, 10:52 PM just wondering if cat has a filter that would replace the oem filter?
DuraBeast2 02-16-2006, 01:57 PM I installed the Unit the Greg makes and it was a snap. I installed pre factory filter and it still only took about 30 minutes to install. I have about 2k after about two weeks of use. It came with a Baldwin 2 micron filter that can be picked up just about anywhere.
Greg sent me the directions to set this up post oem. How did you do it Pre Oem?
chipper 02-16-2006, 02:54 PM The CAT 1R075, 2 micron, fits very well in the 2nd alternator place.Been running one for about 30K.
LTChip 02-16-2006, 03:23 PM Is this CAT 1R075 the same as the one that is used by Nicktane? That one seems too long to fit there.
Also, is the CAT 1R075 one that works with this LS head?
LTChip 02-16-2006, 03:24 PM I also would think that pre-OEM plumbing instructions would be desired. Would enable a longer life on the harder to change OEM filter.
