That would be a personal choice (each to his own).http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

You could run Rotella synthetic. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

optimax, I've been running Rotella Synthetic in mine for last few oil changes. Everything seems fine, and my fuel mileage even went up just a bit. Wal-Mart usually carries it in the gallon jugs, and has the best price. Just FYI, though, most guys run regular dino oil for the first few changes, change it early & often to get everything seated/broken in, then switch to synthetic and get on a regular change interval - more of a cost factor thing. Good Luck, DinoMaxhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I ran Rotella Synthetic in my 2500 for 14000 mi with no problem.I switched to Delvac1 this time to see if I can tell a difference.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will stick with just plain old rotella for the time being! I used it for years and it has been good so I will stick with it for the breakin period

Is that Rotella T 15w40? I seen this in WalMart tonight and I was thinking about using this. What type of oil filter is everyone using?

What Dino Max said, "most guys run regular dino oil for the first few changes, change it early & often to get everything seated/broken in".

That is correct. You shouldn't use synthetic until at least 5,000 Miles. This will give the piston rings time to seat to the cylinder walls as they are made of a harder compound than gas engines and require this break in time to seat properly. I had read this on another site and it was written by an oil vendor who was very explicit about it ( he did sell synthetic too). Just my .02

Road Boss, yes it is. it's 5w15 and the walley world here sells it for 12.96 a gallon. I haven't changed over to that yet, but with current Financial situation Amsoil is just getting too spendy. I am still running the dual oil filter set up from them. greg has a nice mount for this. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I have ran synth Oil since 1980's when I helped rebuild a chevy 350 with 145000 on it and all the guy ever did was run mobil1 with changes at every 15000. he changed filters every 3500. the inside of that thing was sweet.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif. Anyway just mho.... But I like the synthetic. looking to try maybe Delvac1. Also supposed to be a mobil truck/rv synth out there have not seen it yet though. Happy motoring!!! AkDually61

I just did an oil change today. I don't know what the PO was using, but I put in the Rotella T Synth, with a NAPA Gold (Wix) oil filter. Put in the Racor pre-OEM kit at the same time AND replaced the OEM fuel filter with a Baldwin. It starts easier, is quieter, I can tell, just idling, that fuel economy has gone up by at least 5mpg, tires now have better grip on the ice, and the stereo output has doubled. My back doesn't bother me quite as much now either!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

Oldman, are you putting the Rotella T Synth on the ice or on your back???

Also, have you tried it for male pattern baldness?

TIA.

Anyone use Castrol oil?? I see they make a 15W-40 SEMI-synthetic for diesel engines. I have always used Castrol Syntec in my gas motors with good results, and was thinking about trying this in my Dmax. I'm not crazy about dropping to the 5w oils....I run mostly in warmer climates and really don't need it. I'm also not looking for extended oil changes so I'm thinking maybe the semi-synthetic will be good. any opinions???http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Just changed mine today at 9975 miles, (7375 miles on Delvac 1300)with Delvac 1300 15W40. Didn't reset the oil change computer and light finally came on at 10157 on the way back from Daytona Bike Week. Took an oil sample and will send to Blackstone, I will post the results.

May go one more with the 1300, then switch to the "new" Mobil 1 Truck and SUV which is Delvac 1 re-labled, IF I can find it. No luck so far.

What about DELO400 Syn, is anyone running that. I have run Rotella and am considering making a switch to synthetic at my 20,000 mile change.

I just did a oil change today at 8905 miles with Rotella T 15w40. It starts smooth and runs good. So far so good!

AK, you'll like it when you get back up here. I also got my Rotella at Wally World. price was $9.97 a gallon!

Fin, blends are nice, but I wouldn't use one in my DMax. I don't know what the ratio is today, but 3 or 4 years ago the most best I could find was 15% synthetic. I use a blend in an old Suburban that eats oil but I want the protection of a full synthetic for the D-Max.

David, I'll won't find out what it did to traffic on the Glenn until tomorrow. I'm hoping for at least a 50% reduction!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Tires and back. For the baldness, do I shower with it or put on a good coat of it before bed?

IMHO Synthetics are not worth the money. The "Dino" oils are great oils and are more than adequite. Their additive packages and TBN #'s are very good.

The only big difference is the cold weather abilities of the oils. Synthetics have a much lower pour point and lower viscosity.

I do run synthetic during the winter. My logic for that is the better cold weather characteristics of a synthetic and lower viscosity.

This winter with 10 deg. temps and Rotella synthetic, I was getting almost instantanious oil pressure readings.Edited by: JohnnyO

I have to agree with Jonny0, the new Dino oils (CI-4)are very good. If you live in freezing areas you would definetly want Syn, but normal temps I wouldn't think it would be necessary. If you used a good quality Dino and filter with 4,000 to 5,000 Mi. changes, I dought you would ever wear the Duramax out! These engines red line at just a little over 3,000 RPM. Alot of motorcycle riders are running the 15-40 Dino oils in their bikes air and water cooled with great results, and their running 10,000 RPM plus.
