: EFI with a tuner?
coyotekid 12-16-2005, 01:16 AM So I had this wild, possibly stupid, idea today. Suppose I like the Edge tuning in my LLY, but I'd like to add some boost with it.
There's no reason I can't write a stock tune with extra boost, upload that to my PCM via EFILive, and then "stack" a harness box on it, is there?
It would probably make more sense to just do all the tuning via EFILive, but for a beginner, I was just wondering...

:exactly: :exactly: .
hdmax 12-16-2005, 09:39 AM That is very posible, however if you wait a few weeks, or months, (There are already some very good tunes that are being passed around!) there is going to be hundreds of programs around this site. By just asking someone to email a program to you, you will be able to try it out then maybe get another one to compare the two. then you can trade them or maybe buy them. (some will most likely want paid a small amount for their work.) But I think those tuners will be few and far between!
I am sure guys like trippin will send you free tunes that he makes himself, as long as you buy the EFIlive from him. He sent me a tune so I could look at it, and I havn't bought the device, but when I am ready too buy, Guy Tripp will get my money!

That will be an understatement.
All it takes is the investment in the Hardware and the tunes will get to you.
I have sent 5 people various tunes, three members here and two at the EFI-Live forum.
A very minor change will net you some nice extra power.
There will be some Big Tunes written I am sure....;) , if they have not been already......

RaceHemi 12-16-2005, 10:18 AM Same thing happened in the Ford world when SCT began tuning Powerstrokes, some tried building tunes to stack with but quickly realized it wasn't worth the time and effort to work around the short commmings of a harness box, everything you need to make power is in the factory tables. You don't need to fool the ECM if you have full control of the tables to begin with. Stacking served a purpose back in the early days, but looking forward, stacking IS a thing of the past. Period!
GMC-2002-Dmax 12-16-2005, 10:31 AM I would look for lots of tuners, plug in boxes to be FOR SALE here or on Ebay very soon.
Why limit yourself to 4 tunes or 10 tunes when you can have literally dozens.
Makes no sense to me, especially since the cost is less than a good stack will cost you.
All you need is $699.00 and a laptop.
What could be easier ???? or Better ????

SmokeShow 12-16-2005, 12:39 PM Speaking of the laptop.
How much of a computer do you have to have? Like what are recommended sizes for memory and processor? What opporating system can be used? Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, etc?
Approx. how big are each of the tune files? I would assume less than 10MB since people are emailing them to each other and it is my experience that some (I know my Yahoo account does) email providers limits each attached file size to 10MB.
I may just have to try to get me an el cheapo laptop JUST for this software when the time comes to purchasing.

GMC-2002-Dmax 12-16-2005, 12:57 PM Tune files are under 400 KB
I bought a HP with WIN/XP and it has an AMD 2800 Chip in it. Just a basic -no frills laptop. The cost was less than $400 for it.
It doesn't have to be super fast as I edit all the files on my Desktop and then use a flash/usb stick to drop them into the laptop.
I even have an inverter for the truck so I can drive around and log files.
If I want to make a change I pull over shut the truck down, load the new file and I am running again in under 3 minutes.......
Truly an awesome tool for the duramax....

Dmax Tim 12-16-2005, 01:20 PM the only benefit of the box would be switch on the fly.
too bad there can't be 2-3 programs installed like the TTS.

Is there EVER a chance that some brilliant master mind will develop a switch to work with this type of tuning? If not, that is really the only minute shortcoming IMO. IF it can be done some time, this will be a VERY hard system to beat. Again, IMO.

hdmax 12-16-2005, 03:50 PM If they can tap into the TCM (Which they are working on) and can do live monitoring, then I'd say it could be done. But only time will tell. But then what do I know?
RaceHemi 12-16-2005, 05:17 PM Switch able power levels is a great feature if you have 2, 3, or 4 tunes that are perfect, never need adjusting, and you just want to set-it-and-forget-it and send the wife to the store in it. Well things are a little different when you are building tunes from scratch or making adjustments for hardware changes or just to eliminate a quirk that only bothers you. What I have found in the past is when you need to or want to make changes you must first test drive, take some scans and make some observations, after you make your observations you decide what piece of the puzzle requires tweaking and make the change or changes, reflash your ECM and start over. Fire it up, start the data logger, recreate your symptom or test pattern, you did have one right? By that I mean if that pesky quirk only occurs during WOT at 60mph, you must go out and drive it at WOT at 60mph. I think you get the idea, so even though a switch is cool to have sometimes, I have no need for one while tuning a vehicle because I'm scanning, stopping, adjusting, and trying it again so frequently the switch becomes waste of time. Like Tony said, you could be driving along, observe something you don't like or want to change, pull over, make the change, reflash and be testing that change in under 5 minutes. The entire process can be very time consuming, especially if you’re a novice like me! So does that mean I will sell my other tuners when EFILive becomes available for the LLY? Probably not, after all, if I could program as well as the professional guys I would be doing that instead of this real life version of Office Space I’m stuck in.

We have our minimum requirment at 500Mhz with Win98. You might even get away with less because the actual programming part of the operation is not very CPU intensive. The problem you will run into is scantool operation, refreshing gauges and line charts and plotting maps on the fly does take some CPU power, in that case, we say at least 800MHz.
A 1GHz laptop would do the job nicely if you are on a budget, and picking one of those up off Ebay would only set you back $300 or so.
Cheers,
Ross
Dave Lewis 12-16-2005, 09:55 PM I tried the tunes with my Edge / Attitude and while it makes some good power, I don't like not knowing exactly what the Edge is doing in combination with the tune I have loaded. The Edge intercepts and modifies what is sent to the engine, you can't read it and it's difficult to compensate for it. Without it installed you can tune and experience the difference knowing exactly what has changed. Now if I could just convince the wife I need a dyno in a garage big enough to fit my truck.
