As long as it's low sulfur fuel, the only problem is getting caught with it. Fines are pretty stiff and it takes a long time to dilute it with on-road fuel until the system is clean. The fines are pretty heavy too if You get caught.

I work at a refinery, the only difference between red and the stuff you buy at the pump is the dye. Refineries simply add dye to normal diesel to classify it as "off-road". There is a stiff fine if caught, but they would have to catch a sample out of your tank to do that. Unless someone narcs on you, I don't see how you would get caught.

Around here they quite often have roadside checks in which they draw from your tank.

Hey Wyo Dmax... I have always wondered what kind of dye do they use to put in the diesel to change the color.

Ben checked in Texas. I think the delevery driver puts it in your storage as he fills to keep the dye out of his trailer tank as Indigo says it takes a long time to dilute the color out.

The guy who delivers fuel around here has had them follow the truck when it fills a farm tank, then they dip all the road vehicles on the property. I had my tank dipped at a road side weight station just because the truck I was driving had farm plates on it. Big fine, not worth it.

Sounds like the cops waiting across the street from a bar at closing time http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pig.gif.
How do these DOT guys get onto the property? I'd be waiting at the end of the driveway with a shotgun. If you want to stop me on the road fine, but I'll be damned if your going to come onto my property to check. Last I checked, no one pays me money to maintain my dirt road.

Nothing wrong with fishing where the most fish are, except in my state there is no closing time so I can fish all day long. I would however argue that unless there is a search warrant or you fall under commercial vehicle laws, then the gov't will stay out of my tank. I do not run red and do not know of the laws in NV that regulate it, but then again, I'm no trooper, I'm a real pig http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pig.gif.Edited by: HOOKEM

It's just literally a red dye. We dilute the dye to 15% dye and 85% #1, then add it to the diesel at 1 gallon of "dye" per 1000 gallons of diesel. Like someone said earlier, almost impossible to dilute the color out.

Fueled up at a local Gulf yesterday. $1.53 for the taxed diesel and $1.39 for the off road diesel. Would be a nice savings with the amount of miles I will be running for the next year.

Have ran it when I had too. But when at home we run road fuel only.
Difference? Ojeah. Dye? I don't think so.

Ever try to start a fire with road diesel?
Try with off road diesel. Ten times as easy.

Red is diesel that is dyed a pinkish red for offroad use. Since it is used off road, like in tractors, powerunits, construction equipment, and such, it is tax free. If it isn't burned on the hyway then there is no sense in taxing it for maintaning the hyway. I beleive that here in CO the fines for getting caught with it are between $5000-$10000. I have run it on occasion, when it was the only choice, but try not to. I will say that if someone came down my driveway and checked my tank I may have to shoot them for trespassing.

Thanks for the clarification.

Does it perform any better or do they just color it to tell the difference?

My buddy use to deliver dyed fuel around here. He said he loaded once with clear and the manager just gave him a 5gal bucket of dye and told him to dumb it in the top of the tanker. He got a little dye on him, it's still on his coveralls.
