: Duramax idle question
NeilW 02-25-2004, 01:34 PM I have a 2001 duramax with 8.1 allison trans. Truck has 58k on it. I have installed 285 size tires on it recently.
Questions:
Randomly on some cooler mornings I crank the truck, go back inside to feed the dog, come back outside and the truck seems to be reving (sp?) funny. Kind of a growling or grinding noise. Once, I get going an it warms up it quits.
Then, at stoplights it seems to have a mis or skip in the idle.
The truck seems to have lost a little power which is probably because of the bigger tires. Unless, my fuel gauge is broke I am only getting 13.5mpg around town with normal driving style.
Any thoughts on this or has anyone had this problem with the growling idle and skipping.
Thanks, Neil
Oldman 02-25-2004, 04:15 PM Don't know about the engine. Have youhad it reprogrammed for the tires? If not, your speedo and odo will both be off.
NeilW 02-25-2004, 04:22 PM No I have not had it reprogrammed for the tires. Good point, I forgot all about that. That would probably explain the gas mileage issue but, still got the idle issue.
Thanks, Neil

Witch engine do you have? I don't think they make A Duramax with an 8.1
NeilW 02-26-2004, 12:23 AM I have the 6.6 liter duramax motor and the allison transmission.
JoeZep 03-04-2004, 10:44 PM I also have a 2001 Duramax that idles funny it growls most of the time . Anyone have any ideas on why?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
NWDmax 03-04-2004, 10:57 PM its a diesel!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
duramaxdiesel 03-04-2004, 11:00 PM I never brought this up before cause I thought I was hearing things. Looks like I'm not crazy after all cause my 2001 does the same thing. Is there a fix?
Wouldn't it be cool if all 2001 Dmax's were posessed like that car Christine? I need another Coronahttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
JoeZep 03-04-2004, 11:03 PM Yeah I thought it was the turbo blowing off at idle but it's to irregular to be something like that
Black Dog 03-05-2004, 07:31 AM I don't know about "growling", but if your idle surges (rpms jump a little every so often), it is most likely a problem with the fuel pressure regulator. This is a common problem with '01 trucks, and it can be eliminated by replacing the fuel pressure regulator which is attached to the fuel pump. Initially, they were replacing the entire pump assembly, but now they just replace the regulator. I had my pump replaced for this at about 35,000 miles, and the engine has idled perfectly ever since (62,000 now). Edited by: Black Dog
NeilW 03-05-2004, 08:03 AM I tried replacing the fuel filter again and that did not help a thing. I live in North Carolina and it was 63 degrees this morning when I cranked the truck. Still make the funny "scraping or growling" noise even when it is warm outside. May not be just a cold weather problem.
Truck does this in park or drive (when stopped) until the engine is really warm. Then it lightly surges at stop lights.
Maybe it is the fuel pump. I don't know weather to get it fixed and pay the $100 deductable at the dealership or drive it tell it breaks then pay the same $100 deductable.
Oldman 03-05-2004, 11:09 AM Talk to the dealer. It sounds like a common problem. They will probably be aware of the cause and cure.
duramaxdiesel 03-05-2004, 05:11 PM Mine doesn't surge at all. It's kinda weird. Sounds like something's grinding. Oh well, I got the GMPP, let her blowhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
JoeZep 03-05-2004, 05:27 PM fuel pressure regulator sounds like it could be the problem I'll let you all know as soon as I replace it.
JoeZep 03-05-2004, 05:41 PM Has anyone changed the fuel pressure regulator before any suggestions
duramaxdiesel 03-06-2004, 11:02 AM My dad just had his changed because of the surging. I never heard that growling or grinding sound from his though. Hope it works out for you. I had my fuel pump replaced about 6K ago and I still hear the noise. (Thanks again for the info Erichttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif)
NeilW 03-08-2004, 02:40 PM I just spoke with someone by phone who has 6 duramax diesel trucks and he said the grinding noise when the truck is still cold is the power steering pump not opening up but the pulley is stil turning causing the noise. He said it will soon go out and need to be replaced within 5000miles.
I have never heard of a power steering pump making that kind of noise but it may be.
duramaxdiesel 03-08-2004, 03:31 PM Uh oh. I don't think the GMPP will cover thathttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Hope that dude is wrong.
JoeZep 03-13-2004, 04:48 PM Anyone look into this "growling" problem. I haven't changed anything yet. But my truck at a stop light or in park idles funny. Any Ideas.
Help
NeilW 03-15-2004, 09:03 AM Haven't taken mine to the dealer yet! Haven't had time.
