What speed is it safe to Shift into 4hi from 2hi. It seems like shifting while moving could be hard on the truck. Would I be putting a lot less wear on the drivelines if I slow way down to shift and then speed back up.
This has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find anything.

I do it a 40-60mph quite often. don't think it is an issue as long as you are not on dry pavement when you do the switch.

I have done the same without problems.

Likewise here while on the freeway in changing road conditions with snow. Alternated between 4hi to 2 hi, back to 4hi multiple times, no problems at all.

I have done it at high speed too. If you let off and let it shift it will be fine. If you were giving power to the drivetrain it would have a lot harder time going in and then you would have wear like you were saying.

I assume we are talking about the floor shift 4wd vs the push buttom on the dash?
No problem shifting at speed, however, if you are going from 4hi to 2hi and you overshot and hit neutral instead, do not try to go back to 2hi from neutral at speed. You will probably damage the transfer case. I know of one person who did that and had to replace the transfer case.

Just back off on the throttle, click your selection, and back on the throttle.
I've done this many times without incident. Book don't say any different either.

My current truck has push button, but I had a floor shift truck I did the same thing with. No problems as long as you are off the throttle.

;) That was a question I was wondering a lot... I bought my truck months ago and the previous owner forgot to give me the books and so I have to discover how my truck's working.
So, as far as I understand, I can switch 4HI to 2HI and vice versa at speed without trouble. that's great... but, ktmrfs, why not on dry pavement? Is it more risky?
To complete, what is the maximum speed we can run on 4HI?
Last question (probably off topic), anybody can tell me where I can find books, in french, concerning the 6.5TD truck - yr1996? :help2:
Thank you.

Just don't shift it if you are on ice and you got the rear wheels spinning good but you're not moving!

No problems either shifting from 2hi to 4hi, like others say stay off the throttle.
