: Does yours do this?
spencesbridge 12-12-2005, 12:25 PM Hi just wondering if anyone has a temp gauge that kinda cycles between 190 and almost 210. Didn't notice it during the summer but now when the temp reaches almost 210 it immediately drops back to about 190. The fan does not come on. Is this just the thermostat opening? Thought it would just stay at a constant temp. Thanks. Gene
Unit453 12-12-2005, 12:30 PM Thermo opening. Much cooler temps out = a more drastic change in temp cycling. Mine normally goes from around 200 back down to 170 or so and then gradually back up.
luvs hds 12-12-2005, 12:40 PM Mine does what he said:lol2:
BudTX 12-12-2005, 12:51 PM Yep. Thermostat.
aka108 12-12-2005, 04:57 PM Same here since the weather has cooled off. The colder it is, the more pronounced the temp swings especially in stop and go stuff.
Redapple 12-12-2005, 05:28 PM These things have 2 thermostats. They do not open at the same time. When the second stat opens, you will see the temp drop, and then go back to full temp. Mine does this too, it is normal.

jwfab1 12-12-2005, 08:18 PM My truck runs between 190 and 200. Except while towing, it will fluncuate between 190 and at 210 the fam kicks on.
The first time I ever towed it waited till 221 on Edge, before the fan kicked on. At first I thought oh $h!t, I might have an overheater. Hasn't gotten over 210 since then.
RoadRunnerTR21 12-12-2005, 08:40 PM Yup, T-stat. Last Friday night I flew in from Kansas City. The truck was SLOW to start because it was cold outside. As always, I watched the gauges. If I was running 70+, the temp was 195-200. If I was slower, the temp dropped to 170 - 180 even after running for an hour. This is not seen during the summer. BTW, the tranny temp never exceeded 110 ( I was running empty).

I've been seeing the same with my temp gauge, my fan is not coming on at this time either.
spencesbridge 12-13-2005, 12:10 AM Thanks guys, I'll rest easy now. Gene
Honorable 12-25-2005, 10:49 PM Hey All, New to the group here but I have aquestion about this. Will changing the thermostat (or both) fix this or should I just run with it and keep an eye on it.
WAskier 12-26-2005, 12:28 AM Running around empty just doesn't put enough of a load on the truck to make the temp stay up at 210. The winter cover helps a lot.
DURAtotheMAX 12-26-2005, 12:32 AM Up north -10 degrees or so, no winter front, my temp gauge bounces around a lot! Up to 194 (according to the Edge) and then it drops like a rock back to 180 within 5 or 10 seconds. Then it slowly climbs again as the 'stat closes.

killerbee 12-26-2005, 08:34 AM What I have found, in winter the stats are closed 90% of the time. The stationary radiator coolant charge cools dramatically. The first stat cracks, and cools the motor suddenly, the stat closes and the cycle starts over.
If our stats had a hole drilled in them, we wouldn't see this thermal cycling as much.

Just so you know, 220ish IS when the fan comes on in a fabled "overheater". Another clue, a "resistant" truck doesn't even cover the 210* mark all the time that everyone is talking about, but if pushed it too will overheat. Don't feel bad, we are 99% sure that ALL 04.5-05 LLY's will overheat if worked hard.
Happy New Year! :ro)
