Hey all - Just purchased a great 2002 Jetta TDI wagon - to support the biodiesel movement. I love it! Except for the old wet water smell every time I get in and the wet floor after it rains. Going into winter I am a little concerned? Any suggestions where this water is coming from.
Thanks JEt

I too have an 02 tdi wagon. Check all your door molding.

The doors have a plastic liner that seals then, the plastic at times will shrink and pull away from the doors shell.

If it does they will leak, I had an older jetta that leaked, also check the drain holes in the doors, etc, if they plug up they will cause leaks as well.....

The best way to fix it and get rid of the smell is going to be take the seats, carpet and insulation out. Have someone spray water over the car from different places and different angles. Look to see where it comes in. (probably close to where the wet carpet is). You will be able to figure out pretty quickly what is causing it and be able to seal it up. Wash the carpet with soap (laundry detergent works good..just not too much) and rinse it out. Let it sit out until dry. Replace the insulation (called "jute") You can buy it by the yard and auto interior supply stores. Cut it to fit with sharp razor baldes. Put the carpet and seats back and you will be good as new. It is a bit labor intensive, but well worth it instead of that moldy/mildew smell.

Is it possible to tell where the water is coming from? Do you have water in the front or the back or both. I had a car with a leak in the seal of the windshield and my floors were always wet. Or like someone said, the drain plugs might be a problem. Good luck.
