VR Straps... Rick saw it coming and is prepared to supply. I love mine. It just takes the worry out of using the tailgate.

Hot of the presses.

Government Investigating GM Pickups

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government is investigating reports that tailgates are falling off the back of General Motors Corp. pickup trucks without warning.

The investigation could potentially affect thousands of vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Monday said it is looking at the GMC Sierra from model years 1999-2002; the Chevrolet Silverado from model years 1999-2003; the 2002 Cadillac truck and the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Consumers have reported numerous injuries due to the alleged defect, NHTSA said. In one case, a tailgate separated from a moving vehicle. In another, the tailgate broke as a consumer was loading an all-terrain vehicle onto his pickup. The ATV fell on him and broke his shoulder.
NHTSA said it appears that support cables can break due to metal fatigue, but consumers can't see if they're worn because they're covered with a protective plastic sheath.

NHTSA investigations sometimes lead to vehicle recalls.

I notice that it says 1999-2003. Don't the 2004 models have cables? Maybe they just haven't had enough time to break yet?

<DIV>These boneheads at GM could solve this problem by using stainless cable made the same way.</DIV>
<DIV>They could use the same ends and coating their using now.</DIV>

According to the article the investigation started in Oct 2003 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

Pilot's post indicates up to 2003 Chevy's, but only up to 2002 GMCs, while NY DMax's post (which is older) only indicates up to 2002 for both, while the original post indicates up to 2003 for both GMC & Chevy.

I thought that the only difference between the two were some chrome and the GMC's bigger washers. ;)

Yes I'm prepped. Just placed an order for more stock. Anyhow this with either boost business or kill it. Either way it's a problem that needed addressing.

Anyhow I wonder if there is a recall, what's GM going think when some of us go to dealer to pick up our free straps and just throw them in the back seat for storage and they see the stainless straps? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

Also with the recent discovery of these fitting Avalanche's I've learned one thing, these guys are every bit as fanatical about their trucks as we are.

Well my cables cut loose on me yesterday. The left one severed and left all the load on the right one. It pulled the bolt that attaches to the bed to pull out and bend the metal where it attaches to the bed.

Fortunately, it didn't hit the bumper. But it does look like it bent the hinge bracket at the bottom right corner.

I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow and show him and see what they think. I've got 40k so it's out of warranty but I'll carry this article along and see what they say.
