Over on the TDI Club board, someone in MN sighted a Chevy 1500 pickup fueling with diesel, with manufacturer plates. Said it didn;t quite sound like a Duramax but was a diesel. Check it out...

GM needs to get in the light(er) duty diesel market. IMO the first to market with it will have a gold mine. If they had a small (6 cyl) fuel efficient diesel motor in 1/2 tons, suburbans etc they would sell a lot. I think the majority of diesel buyers now use their trucks as cars. 30mpg in a 1/2 ton with a good ride, seating for 6 and a 6 foot box out back would appeal to a lot of people.

That would be sweet, getting 25 to 30mpg. The only downside would be diesel fuel stations getting busy with commoners. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I'll keep my eyes open. I fuel at the same station. If you can get more info from the guy on TDI. Color, 4x2 or 4x4, cab box config, etc.

Frod is talking about a new V6 diesel (Cummins?) for their 2006 F-150. The article I read said that Frod wanted to be the first to put diesel power in their 1/2 ton trucks. I'm sure that GM has something planned.

well - for those of you interested, he was probably buying kerosene for his garage heater. At fleet farm (where I buy all my diesel) they have the kero pumps right by the diesel pumps.

I really really doubt it was a 1500 diesel...

Ford is also talking about putting the lil V6 in something the size of the Explorer. I agree, the first out with a diesel 1/2 ton will make a mint!! Sure would like to see the 2500 Suburban get the D/A. That would be sweet!!!!

... and then there would be a stonger demand for cleaner diesel fuel and more diesel pumps. Wouldn't that be nice http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif.

The Cold Start Knock phenomenon common with the new gassers was probably the noise the guy was hearing thinking it was a diesel. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifEdited by: Minn-Kota

It wasnt a diesel its just that dam annoying piston slap the gassers have. Mine had it so loud it wont the neighbors when I fired her up in the am.

Chevy changed its moto to Like a Knock.

The piston slap cost me 12k so I have the right to bitch.

So, the article on the TDI forum mentions that "All the markings on the truck was 1500". Last I checked, 2004 Chevy's and GMC's don't have 1500 logos. Sounds like wishful thinking to me. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Gm does have a 6 cylinder baby-baby- Duramax. They were made, GM does have em'. Just the factory is waiting for the go-ahead....Which may never happen. Someone here confirmed this before.

For those who had the pleasure of driving or owning a 1/2 ton diesel(only the 6.2) They were one hell of a pickup. Id spend 40K to get a half ton stepside 4x4 diesel, with a snow plow prep right now. Plow like an SOB.

Sure do. GM doesn't make a 1500HD for 2004 however.

Yeah yeah! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif And perhaps a 2500HD owner has rebadged his/her truck. I'd say that's more likely than GM adding a diesel and 1500 cladding to an '04 truck. Of course, I wonder how the original poster KNEW that the rig in question was an '04?

I'd love to see a half-ton diesel, but I won't get my hopes up. I expect we'll see the duramax in suburbans and H2's before we see a half-ton variant.

But if they get a smaller diesel in a 1/2 ton first it would be easy to drop it in a sub. I though the main reason the duramax wasn't in a sub is because there is no room for alli. Who knows, its all speculation anyways. I sure would like to see it however! While we're dreaming we might as well hope for 400hp and 40mpg too http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif If they do that I will buy 3.

i have never heard of a baby d/max your all crazy....it would be cool but doubt very much it will happen...as far as piston slap i have yet to see any damage from the carbon yet people keep bichin about itwhen there is nothing wrong...there is a fix gm wont approve.i toyed with on once and found a way to get rid of the noise using gm top engine cleaner...yet not how it is directed to be used....

The baby Dmax has been talked about for years. Slice off two Dmax cylinders and you have about 5 liters. I'd think it would be more quiet than the 6.6L, not louder as was observed. Maybe it isn't an Isuzu?

I spoke with a senior mucky muck from GM commercial vehicles at SEMA in November. I asked him when if ever the duramax was coming out in the Suburban.

he said:

2008 at earliest

That the Dmax would have to be detuned (or smaller version) due to limited ability of the 4L80E to handle the torque. I asked about the allison in a Suburban. He said that it doesn't fit.

The duramax is coming out in the van's in 2005. Also detuned or smaller version due to limitations of the tranny.

I think the big three need a foreign kick in the A#$ to get them moving. How hard would it be to redeseign the vans and Subs to fit the Allison? Lame is all I can say.

I want both a DMAX Sub and a Dmax 4 wheel drive full size van. guess I'll be waiting...

I dunno. If GM Powertrain could update the 4L80E to hold more torque for the 8.1, and call it the 4L85E, why can't they update it again, this time to like a 4L90E designation or something, and you can have the full torque of the Duramax. This way the trans fits without any modifications needing to be made. I would imagine if GM can get the big block to fit in the Sub that they could make the Duramax fit also. What did Powertrain do to the trans to make it hold more torque? Couldn't they do more, to make it hold even more torque then?

Have a good one!!

For you locals, here's what the guy said he saw:

"Extended cad, short box, 4X4 and nothing distinctive about except for the fact it was a diesel. The color was white."

Don't the 1500s have a decal somewhere on the forward part of the door?

We can always dream. And be on the lookout.

2008 is not that far away to have units on the road now.

I'll keep an eye open. That particular Fleet Farm has only one Diesel pump and the kero pump is across the lot.

TheChevyHDMan, I hear ya. My 1/2 ton 6.2, 2.73 rear, 2wd got an honest 26 mpg and even got 29 once!!! Didn't have a ton of power but being unloaded 99% of the time it did everything I wanted. As much as I love my HD I'd seriously consider a 1/2 ton CC.

They did in 2002, but I think they discontinued that badging in 2003, and I know the 2004's aren't badged like that.

Locals, keep your eyes peeled. As skeptical as I am, I would love to be proven wrong on this one.

It is still there but the 1500HD has been re-badged for 2004. It is now a 2500 Crew Cab (non-HD). I feel this is the badge the 1500HD should have had from the start. There is also a 1500 Crew Cab which will be a 143" wheelbase 6lug wheel with a 5'8" bed.

Currently under design: 3.0L class-direct-injection, four-cylinder (for Isuzu Rodeo and GM sport-utility) and V6 (unspecified displacement). The beta testing for the V6 is on going in both Aluminum and Iron blocks.

Also:

Coming soon

GM will be bringing out a V6 version of the Duramax for smaller vehicles (smaller than the 3/4-ton truck it comes in now).

Ford V6 4.5-liter "baby Powerstroke" for the F-150 pickup, Expedition and E-150 van, by 2005 -- could end up in SUVs

Ford is planning a clean-running diesel for the Ford Focus car for the USA.

Detroit Diesel/Allison "Delta" V6 diesel - common-rail, direct injection - to be installed in SUVs and light trucks.

Mercedes-Benz is to offer a diesel-powered version of its 2004 model E Class sedans.

VW 12-cylinder diesel, in the new VW SUV (rumored).

While I agree that the vehicle previously called a 1500HD still exists under a different name, the model has been discontinued for 2004. You won't see a 2004 truck badged 1500HD.

I was fueling at a Flying J in North Carolina a couple of months ago and a fellow pulled up across the pumps in a little gold-colored car and popped in the diesel hose. I didn't pay too much attention, figuring that it must have been a VW. However, I was fueling my main and aux tanks, so he finished, went inside, returned and drove off while I was still pumping. As he swung out and around my rig to leave - a metallic gold Ford Focus with demo tags. Must have been a test car with a European (South American?) drive train.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
