: Can someone take a picture of the sunroof in their truck?
TTA89 12-09-2005, 09:53 AM I am having second thoughts and thinking about adding this to my order before GM accepts it. I know a lot of people dislike it, but it seems the people that have it do like it.
Can someone take pics or know where there are pics of it?
PFlorenzano 12-09-2005, 10:28 AM Hi There TTA89,
Like you, I'm ordering the sunroof too but I may have second thoughts myself because I like the roof to go inside the roof, not on top. But they way that I look at it to is that I'm not going to use it very often and the reason I really like it is because extra light can get in while you are driving.
Let me know what you deside.
Thanks,
Pete
I ordered it on mine, thought it'd be nice to be able to crack it open on a balmy day. Never had one before, not sure what to expect.
LeadfootDuramax 12-09-2005, 11:57 AM If you are thinking about it that much, I would go ahead and order it. You will always wish if you don't. It won't change your payments too much. I am sure for every horror story, there are a bunch that work fine. If not, that is what warranty is for.
GO FOR IT MAN!! :ro)
Wasted Income 12-09-2005, 12:11 PM I LOVE mine. I use it every day that it is warm enough to. I haven't had any leaks, and I run it through a high pressure touchless carwash every week.
The only thing I'm pissed about is that I paid around $1200 for the option, and now I see for '06 it's down to around $700...d'oh!
LARSONEM 12-09-2005, 12:43 PM I too have never had a sunroof on any of my vehicles, until I recently bought my fuel fighter Olds Alero that I eventually plan on having my daughter drive. It had a sunroof in it. On hot days I'd leave it closed and run the AC. But early morning drives to work and later in the evening running errands and picking up kids in town, having it open was great. I really enjoyed it. Of course with the cold weather now, it hasn't been opened for a while. I'd strongly consider one in a future vehicle.

Dirt Dog 12-09-2005, 01:14 PM I wondering just how much light it lets in through the mesh shade. In Texas, light = heat :badidea:

I was looking to have one installed on my truck. My dealer has a really awesome aftermarket department that can do just about anything you want them to. BUT, they wanted to charge me $1200 for the sunroof and $1500 for a rear DVD/headrest system. Not sure if I want to drop $1200 just for a sunroof. Anybody know of any other set ups out there?

I just sold my Cadiallac Escalade and I really liked the moonroof. I hardly ever closed the shade and the mesh works a bit better than say your solar ray windows.
mattydmax 12-09-2005, 01:31 PM I just checked those pictures and the sunroof only has a screen? In Arizona that would be torture. We had a car with just a screen and it would boil the center console so if you set your arm on it it would leave a mark. If you live where the sun shining in can be a problem you are definitely going to want a sunroof that has a solid sliding cover and doesn't allow any sun to shine in. We have a sliding cover on our Volvo and it works great! It will also more than likely allow a little more wind noise into the cab at highway speeds.
Army Dad 12-09-2005, 01:37 PM We've got a new LBZ with sunroof. DW insisted on it. We take our puppies with us unless insufferably hot. Allows heat to escape from cab.

I just called the Dealer to have them add it to my order. Its 795 on the Sticker and 660 on the Invoice. With the GMSD pricing its probably a tad less than that. I'll cross my fingers that when the truck shows up in Feburary or March there is more than a $1000 rebate on it.
Sunroof is a Go! I don't mind more light in the cab, I drove Vettes with Glass Roofs and have had a few F-bodys with T-tops and never used the shades in any of them. I'm sure I'll like it!
PFlorenzano 12-09-2005, 02:16 PM Does that mesh shield slide back by itself so that just the moonroof/glass is exposed, without the moonroof being opened?
I have a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi with the power moonroof that has both a sliding shield that slides inside the roof as well as the moonroof itself.
denmen 12-09-2005, 03:27 PM Try these for aftermarket sunroofs.

www.webasto.us
They are much nicer and seem to do more than OEM. Cost the same if not cheaper.
northwood 12-09-2005, 03:47 PM yes the shield on the gm sunroof in the pu slides back even with the glass shut
denmen 12-09-2005, 03:48 PM Woops....try this one instead for aftermarket sunroofs.

jpru5112 12-09-2005, 04:04 PM I wondering just how much light it lets in through the mesh shade. In Texas, light = heat :badidea:
The mesh shade sucks-:t , it lets in a lot of heat in the summer. I don't like mine. Also, the overhead compartment is much smaller due to the sunroof.
scottdiesel 12-11-2005, 12:19 AM The mesh screen is great! The sunroof is great! Good choice!!
Carmine LBZ 12-11-2005, 02:52 AM I've had sunroofs in my last 5 vehicles. I didn't use them all that much, but thought they were cool anyway for the few times that I did. When I ordered my new truck, I decided against the sunroof, because with the sliding interior panel closed, the light still gets in through the mesh. If the interior panel was solid, I might have ordered it...Carmine
I was having a real problem finding a GMC Silver Berch crew cab short bed 4x4 w/LBZ so when one popped up with the sunroof I took it. I don't like the mesh screen at all and wish they had a sold option available. I like the previous post don't like the fact that the glass slides up and over instead of into the roof. I did want the universal remote so I sort of had no choice because the UR is tied to the SR option, no SR, no remote. Sort of like the power seat option, if you want power passenger seat you must spring for the leather. The wife hates leather but loves her dual 6 way power custom cloth seats in her '02 Avalanche so we again on the 2500HD had no choice and had to get the leather SLT package with the 10 way leather seats.
The other problem with the SR option is the roof console has this mini pocket which is useless. At least with the one in the Avalanche you can install a gauge cluster. Other than these minor *****es you will love the truck with the Sun Roof.

elvis_knows 12-11-2005, 03:03 AM If the mesh sunshade lets in too much light and heat during hot weather, it would be easy to insert thin opaque reflective material (like aluminum foil, or metallized radiant barrier) above it. Of course, you'd have to devise a way to secure it so that it didn't fly out if you retract the sunroof with the mesh screen still in place.
dh515 12-11-2005, 03:22 AM The mesh shade sucks-:t , it lets in a lot of heat in the summer. I don't like mine. Also, the overhead compartment is much smaller due to the sunroof.
:exactly:
Wish I didn't have it. Anyone who lives in the desert knows why!
Also, that sunshade is on a roller which prevents anything from being attached to it to block the light because it won't retract. In order to get to it (to replace it with a solid material), you'd have to take the headliner and A pillars out. Not any easy fix. Best I came up with was limo tint on the glass and it still lets in too much light in the summer.
Cougar281 12-11-2005, 11:18 AM Personally, I'd go afteramrket. Someone posted on here pics of their truck with an aftermarket sunroof that went down inside the roof. Looked great. When I ordered my truck, I wished that a sunroof was available, and when the '05s came out with the sunroof, I was like "maybe I sould've waited a few months" until I saw that it slid up over the roof -:t . NO WAY (for me). Just my $.02
elvis_knows 12-11-2005, 11:19 AM You don't have to remove the headliner or A-pillar to apply radiant barrier film to the sunroof.
3M Scotchtint Silver These 3M Window Films offer high performance in terms of heat rejection. They have a silver color due to the metal coating and will not fade or change color.
3M Scotchtint Exterior Sun Control Window Film Reflective RE15SIARXL
Exterior Silver high performance sun control film. Used where solar heat reduction is the major concern. Commonly installed on skylights.

And, an even simpler insert would stay in place as long as:
1) the mesh sunshade is not retracted
2) the sunroof is not opened
There probably is no real need to open the sunroof when it's so hot that the OEM mesh screen lets too much heat in.

Hi Cougar281,
Do you know the person who posted the pictures of the aftermarket sunroof? I would love to see them?
Thank you,

Check out this (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27729&page=2&highlight=sunroof) thread, and maybe contact devil and/or sp33d. I think they both have aftermarket sunroofs (sp?) in their trucks.
PFlorenzano 12-11-2005, 11:52 AM Thank you for the quick reply Cougar,
I was going to order the optional sunroof until I seen what Wabasto can do?
Thanks again,
Pete..:)
SixPak 12-11-2005, 12:52 PM I wondering just how much light it lets in through the mesh shade. In Texas, light = heat :badidea:
I have the sunroof in my 05 and my complaint is that it lets in too much light/heat. The inner shade doesn't stop the light enough for me. I think I'm going to have a guy put a "limousime tint" on the inside of the glass to block it out. I really wished they had made the inner shade opaque to block the light and heat from the sun.

3M Scotchtint Sun Control Films P-18ARL
This high performance silver film is the most efficient 3M sun control film. It is used where solar heat reduction is the major concern. Commonly installed behind tinted and clear glass, it is a popular commercial market product. This film offers 3M's unique abrasion resistant coating for added durability.
Metalized radiant barrier film blocks far more of the heat than "limousine tint," which is more for blocking visible light.

Ok, are the 3M products listed above not 'metalized radiant barrier film'?
If not, where can I get it?
elvis_knows 12-11-2005, 02:07 PM Yes, the 3M films referenced at the link are metalized radiant barrier films, which look shiny due to their metallic coating as opposed to a dark "limousine tint" film.
These 3M Window Films offer high performance in terms of heat rejection. They have a silver color due to the metal coating.
If you check the specs sheet on the 3M Scotchtint Sun Control Film P-18ARL, it has up to 72% solar heat reduction, one of the highest of any window film available from 3M.
Here's link to a chart with the specs of all the 3M Scotchtint Sun Control Window Films:
http://www.adec3m.com/Windowtinting/3m%20PerformanceGuide.htm
It looks like 3M RE15SIX has 83% solar heat reduction on clear glass, and 86% solar heat reduction on tinted glass.

There are also other types of radiant barriers that are not designed to be adhered to glass, like these: http://www.energyefficientsolutions.com/shopping.asp

blacksmoke 12-11-2005, 02:41 PM Does anyone know who chevy uses for their factory sunroofs,or do they make it??
CRICKEYDOG 12-11-2005, 07:41 PM I was looking to have one installed on my truck. My dealer has a really awesome aftermarket department that can do just about anything you want them to.
Don't do it!!!!!! Been there, done that, regretted it every day afterwards. It leaked, never worked properly, cost too much, and it looked aftermarket. Work was done by a dealer with a custom aftermarket shop on the premisis. Either order it from the factory or do without. It isn't worth the aggrivation. We ordered it on our truck. Wouldn't be without a factory sunroof again.
Truck on!!!:)

I had just the opposite experience. I had a webasto holandia sunroof installed locally. IMHO is is far better than the factory option, doesn't leak (and I leave in northwest oregon with constant rain), costs less than factory. It retracts inside, has a real fabric covered retractable sunshield, and is very quite. FYI, webasto makes many of the OEM sunroofs for all the vehicle manufaturers. Mine was installed by a local custom shop that does work for dealers all over nortwest oregon, southern washington.
ktmrfs 12-11-2005, 10:01 PM Does anyone know who chevy uses for their factory sunroofs,or do they make it??
It looks a lot like a webasto solaire. I don't know if they design there own or OEM.
blacksmoke 12-19-2005, 08:46 AM So chevy used the less expensive (opening outside) sunroof?
2leight 12-19-2005, 10:17 PM I, like one of the previous replies, got the sunroof only to get the Homelink. I love having the sunroof, but if given a choice would go with nicer aftermarket version. The stock feels very small in comparison to most and that part about sliding out of the roof - looks like a wing from a Sprint car! I tell my friends it is because LBZ power needs down draft to hold the road! (The positive is you can hang a big DVD screen securely. In my wifes 300 the DVD flops around in the headliner)
After a month of ownership I have forgotten how small it feels and quit looking at the roof outside when it is open, so wouldn't be without it.
When it gets to 118+ next summer I may be looking for some asbestos shield for that flimsy roll up shade, but its still worth it!
tentspike 12-19-2005, 10:33 PM I like mine. But it is very small. The sun roof on my motherinlaws new Cadillac SUV is huge. She got in the back seat of my crew cab and said that for such a big truck they gave you a very small Sun Roof. Hers goes over the rear seat Passengers lap. What I don't like about mine is, I think it would be a lot quieter when opened if it was inside the shell and the wind wasn't pouring over the whole contraption. Still I like it better than not having one. One tip though..... When you wash your truck, make sure you don't foreget to fully seat the window closed.:exactly: I found out the hard way and got water on the mesh screen and seat before I realized it. The mesh had a stain that was very hard to get rid of. Still have some :help:
