I Need :help: ,

My Brand new Pro-Comp 6079s are on my daily driver, my stock rims no longer have tires on them.

What can i do to keep the salt from destroying them? 1" thick layer of wax, spray on wax, wash them every night?

I want them to be just as good as they were before all this snow and ice

I thought chrome wasn't affected by salt? I know my polished aluminum welds are a different story though! Salt causes havoc with them after even the first trip to the mountains.

I heard that you should remove them for winter?

I dont know if im overreacting or what, ive been spraying alot of that Teflon Tire stuff on them. The stuff you put on the tires, it seems to be creating a protective barrier. I hope, ive been cleaning them dialy.

I tend to clean my wheels after every time I get back from skiing. It helps but the salt still does its thing and makes them dull.

what I should do is get a set of winter treads for the truck and put them on the PYO's I have sitting around. I might still do that so I don't have to worry about my welds getting all chewed up.

But again, from what I've read I think chrome isn't affected by the salt and other deicer chemicals like bare alu is.

Even a small amount of salt or magnesium chloride will eat a non-sealed weal alive. My family has been in the aftermarket wheel industry for over 15 years and I can tell you that almost every pair of wheels we have ever owned have oxidized (This fact of life really does not go over well with customers). The best two things that you can do are to find a good metal sealer and to wash your truck as often as the weather permits its. (I washed an Escalade in the snow last year after driving to Denver in an effort to keep the wheels from oxidizing) If you're not up for this, change out your wheels for the winter.

Ok, i guess ill just rinse the wheels and get lots of carwashes then.

I found a set of 05 chrome stockers on ebay for $155. I ordered 4 BF Goodrich commercial tracts from Sams (235-85-16 skinny's) $541 mounted ballanced and road hazard. I think this will be a good winter set up, for not a lot of money.

I just got my chrome wheels (no tires yet), and I sealed them with Poorboy's Wheel Sealant. Everything I've read says the stuff is great on any type of finish and protects the wheel for 4 or 5 months when 3 coats are used. First two coats are one right after the other, then wait 24 hrs for it to cure, then put another on. The stuff makes the wheels slick as heck. They claim you can almost just hose off your wheels to clean them.

After you put this on, you can clean your wheels with a microfiber and Poorboy's Spray and Wipe. Much easier than breaking out the hose in 20 degree weather. I use their other products too and they are great. Good customer service too.

I used to coat my chrome wheels with vasoline (yes, vasoline) during the winter months. It looked like crap, but even a power washer couldn't remove it from the wheels. I had to use paint thinner and a rag to remove it in the spring. After five years, they wheels still looked great.

There is a product called "wheel shield" that I bought at Belle tire. I use it on my chrome rims and run the rims year round. It protects from brake dust too. You spray it on, let it dry and buff it off. It protects for 6 months, but I retreat every 3. So far so good, no rust on my chrome rims. I also thought chrome was impervious to the environment. The first set of chrome rims I had rusted before they were out of warranty, luckily Belle tire was cool and swapped them out for me, they almost denied the waranty due to "neglect". When they told me I had to use wheel shield on the next set that was good enough for me. :ro)

Ive been really good about washing them. I bought some of that junk at wal-mart the wheel cleaner.

If i dont let the salt sit on them for more than a couple days, and hose them off will that work?

Are they gonna rust if i dont coat them?

chrome won't rust and Aluminum for sure won't rust. The problem you're going to have is it's going to get an oxidized, sort of cloudy, look if the salt does get to it. Just keep 'em clean and they'll be fine. Some of the products mentioned above, the metal shields and other products would be helpful too.

I had the chrome wheels on my last truck ('99 silverado 1500). After 5 years, they started to "flake". I wasn't too pleased because I took good care of them. I live in the great rust belt and never had an extra set to run in the winter. I got H2's on the HD and they been holding up very well.

ive heard that by smearing a very light coat of vaseline over the wheels protects them. some old tire guy in my hometown told me that. he said he just smear some on when salt was bein put on the road, leave it on till the salt was pretty much gone then go sprayy it off at the car wash.
