i bought my truck 3 years ago and immediately had problems with it. i knew nothing about diesels and nothing about the 6.5. so i took it to a diesel mechanic who i did not know and he informed me that i needed a new injection pump. when i found out how much that was going to cost, this college student was not happy. so i did a little research at the spur of the moment and found that it was a pretty common prob. so i found one on ebay, supposedly new, had it installed, and now 20K later, i am having problems. at the same time the guy replaced some oil pressure switch (i believe) and i replaced my PMD with a cooler and remote mount. when i accelerate hard, with a heavy load, or up a hill, the engine sputters/chokes for a bit, then picks up and is fine. any help on whether this is my injection pump or something else?

gm has a 120,000 miles, 193,000 km or 11 year warranty on the injection pump. with a 95 you are in the coverage but depends now on the mileage. maybe get yourself a low mile instrument cluster.

Sounds like fuel supply problem to me. Check the lift pmp and OPS out first off.

When was last fuel filter change, start with that then troubleshoot fuel delivery as detailed in FAQ links, before thinking about IP issues, also you may repeat may be able to recover reimbursement from GM some or all of the IP replacement if you can prove details how much and why IP replacement was required, since your truck then was still within warranty, may be a tough sell but if you don't ask you know the answer.

i would also check the waste gate. if its stuck you could get a bogging/choking condition on accel.

Have a look see at the FAQ's. Things to check: lift pump, fuel filter, and turbo. All threads listed there. Quicker yet: try the diagnostic checklist sticky too. You'll be very familiar with your engine by the time you reach the bottom of the Q&A. Answer key provided in post #2 of the thread.

thanks for the response. i am new to the page and found lots of interresting info in the FAQ links. have not had time to read all that i want due to final exams at school, but hope to get to it soon.
as for my truck, i was just over the milage when i had the pump replaced the first time, and even attempted to get it warranteed, but to no avail. so no chance at reimbursement. as far as the fuel filter, i used to change it with every oil change, but have slacked a little lately. (but prob only has 8K on it. don't know if that is a lot or not??) that will be the first thing i do. it does make sense that it only takes one bad tank of fuel.
thinking back, i now recall that when i had the pump installed, i did have the turbo worked on, believe the wastegate soleniod(?) was replaced as the truck smoked pretty bad on hard acceleration.
i also had the oil pressure switch replaced at that time.
you guys bring up the lift pump which i am unfamiliar with but am going to do some looking into. any other help on diagnosing it on your own?
again, i do not get this choking or stumble ever time i accelerate, and sometimes not even on a hard acceleration, it is kind of random, but still related to a hard load.
again thanks for your replies, and this page seems to be very helpful in my first couple of days

My Sub did the same thing when I first bought it, like it was running out of fuel. I thought it was air in the lines and opened the "T" valve on the engine to purge the air out, instant stall! ( I am new to the diesel so I can and will do stupid things) Then I went to try and start it back up... Nothing. I hotwired the lift pump and it pumped very slowly. so I replaced the lift pump. My problems went away. It's an easY 10 minutes (with drinks) tops replacement deal.
