The LLY motors have cats?

Is it ok to remove them and what will it effect?

Thanks!

It wouldn't hurt. But the CAT police wouldn't like it. Both state and federal say no, but they have to catch you first!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

How would they catch you, no smog in CA right?

Would it help the motor breath? Would it trip any codes?

I believe there's talk of them starting the smog in 2006-2007 for the diesels. I don't know for sure so don't qoute me. I've been meaning to investigate and find out any details I can since I need to do some thing with my exhaust. could be that even if they start it might not effect us. Only those vehicles starting from the date they start testing (ex. 2006 and newer).

Don't know if you seen it but they also do random testing and pull people over at the side of the road. Not exactly enough time to yank something off!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Don't believe it would trip any codes. As far as helping the motor breath, a big yes.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Turbo spools up faster and EGT's come down.

Before i even had my LP's come in i had my muffler off with a 5" tip. This sounded good for awhile. Then thanks to the people on this website i found a 6" tip. That made it sound about the same. So one night we got the cutting torch out, cut the cat off. My welding guy couldn't get the new pipe back on, so waited till morning to let the muffler shop replace the pipe. Needless to say, with that 6" tip, no muffler, no cat, my truck is about the loudest thing around. I havent throw any codes, but my mileage did go up about 2mpg. 20 now on the highwayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif. I have also heard 06' being the diesel emissions year. My only worrie is the dealership, what are they going to do when i take it in for my service 4wd light?

FWIW most states have a visual check for the CAT. However, if they do tailpipe testing - you could fail without the internal medium. The old trick of emptying the cat housing or placing a straight pipe through the housing will get you by the mirror-check. Tailpipe analysis is another question.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I wouldn't do it....... unless of course you want the turbo to spool up really quick and the truck to haul a$$. The only after effect is the smile on your face and the smell of a diesel powered truck.

In 2006 or there after you'll all be singing the blues when they instate the upcoming smog laws for diesels. It is coming... I know for a fact that michigan is going to reinstate vehicle inspection, just not sure what counties it will effect yet. I'm sure most northern folks won't have to have inspection. But heavily populated areas will be a different story.

I bought my truck 4 weeks ago and the dealer made me sign a waiver that I would NOT modify the catalytic converter in any wayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif, or it would void my manufacturers warranty. I think i'll leave mine on, but to each his own. Edited by: 338_

Removing the CAT should improve exhaust flow, but as others have said about new standards coming, I wouldn't get rid of the stuff. It also depends on what your Service Manager's attitude toward your warranty might be if you modify the exhaust by removing emission equipment.

For me, it's not even an option. There are currently four Counties in this State who require diesel emission testing. They put 'em on a dyno and a sniffer up the pipe, and I live in one of those four Counties. That plus the SM at my local dealership has not even been friendly let alone cooperative....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

If you have someone fab up some flanges for your Cat and the exhaust pipe. Then have an "Off Road Pipe" made to fit the same spot. You could run the cat when you need to get your IM test. Then for the other 364 days of the year you could run your "Off road Pipe" Or your "Hollow Cat" in the same spot.

Camaros, Firebirds and Corvettes with cats have been doing this for years with no trouble. The 95 and newer cars needed to run O2 Simulators. behind the "Off Road" Pipe so as not to throw a code.
We don't have O2 sensors behind the cat so one less issue to deal with

Side note:
I was told that the LB7 4" Exhaust bolts up to the LLY. VERY NICE!!!!

The lovely state of Nevada, at least in the county I live in, is already mandating diesel smog checks on trucks under 9900lbs gross. I have not had to do mine yet but a friend had his Ford done. They didn't even let him see what they did. They took it around back and came back a few minutes later and said that will be $45.00 please. Have to wait and see when it is my turn. And unfortunatly my truck has a cat on it.

Sorry Zeeb, here I find myself in another cat post with you. I'm trying to excercise some self control, really I am. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Bolting the cat back in to my Banks system is an hour job. So when the time comes.......

Well Trippin.....

I sort of figured we MIGHT hear from you....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

LLY DMAX and I have been exchanging some ideas along those same lines since he lives just a little ways North of me in the State.

I'm still trying to look at all the options, but until I get that phone call from Edge, I'm not going to get serious about which way I'll go on the exhaust. I've always had an appreciation of the Banks stuff, but ATS is right here up the road, and there's another shop, Gillette Diesel who puts out some nice looking stuff. So I'm reasonably certain I could get what ever I decide on with the possible exception of a bigger CAT.

Carry on with that newly stinky lost kitty diesel of yours.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Zeeb, please let me know about your kitty discoveries. I'm all for putting the cat in it's rightful place if I can do it without effecting performance............too much.

I've had really good experiences dealing with the ATS people. Seeing the dual pipes smoking on the dyno looked really cool. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Well I live in Canada too and there are emmision laws. We have to run our vehicles through "Air care" regularly. If your truck comes from the factory with a cat, you better have one when you get tested or you will be putting it back on. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gifEdited by: Dmaxcan

I am in the yukon and we have no emmission laws. If there are emission laws up here then nobody enforces them. If we did half of the indian wagons up here would be taken off the road. Also a lot of the semis would be taken off the road to. It is actually quite amusing to watch what motorists do when the get a huge cloud of black smoke in their face when the are behind some of the trucks up here.</TD></TR>

338, if you remove the cat completely and install a new downpipe and then new exhaust you are not modifying the cat at all you are just taking it out of the picture. By mods they mean doing anything internally to the cat itself, not removing it until you need to take it in for service. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I was wondering on the LB7 motors, well mine atleast, there is what seems to be a CAT right after the downpipe. I have a 04, but a early model one.

I have a CA 2002 which came with a CAT. I purchased/installed the Banks 4" exhaust which connects at the down pipe (Removes the CAT). My truck has been to the dealership twice since the install. The truck has been up on a lift for oil changes and differential service. The dealer hasn't said anything about the missing CAT. I spoke with one of the diesel mechanics about my exhaust system. He had no problem with it and said it will perform better with an aftermarket exhaust system. The service writer said the only issue would be the emmission system or lack there of. Meaning the new exhaust would not be covered by GM. NOW, If I have an EGR problem will that be covered?

One thing nice about the Banks system, I can reinstall the CAT in about 30 minutes if needed.
