I think that it goes like this:

The 33x13.5-16LT is an american sizing

The tire is 33 inches tall overall, and 13.5 or 13 and a half inches wide and fits on a 16 inch rim the LT stands for Light Truck.

The 285/75/16 is a mix match of metric and american

The 285 is 285 Milli meters width of the tire thread or about 11 and 1/4 inches wide
The 75 is the % of the sidewall to the tread, the sidewall is 75% of the tread width, about 213.75 millimeters tall or 8 and 3/8 inches

And the 16 is still a 16 inch tall rim.

So you add 8 3/8 + 8 3/8 + 16 inches = about 32 3/4 inches tall

These measurements are usually done on a mounted but unloaded tire

.

PS. the 2 tires are about the same height but the first is almost 2 1/4" wider

I just checked my own tire sizes for my dually.

I had 215/85/16 or

8 1/2 inches wide by 30 1/4 inches tall

I upgraded to 235/85/16 so now I have

9 1/4 inches wide and 31 3/4 inches tall tires

So 4 tires on the rear mean I have 18 1/2 inch wide on each side or a total tread width of 37 inches :ro)

Steam roller coming thru ):h

.

Edit. had to fix my math

Well, sort of. The width of the tire is at the widest part of the tire (section width). Usually tread is about 2 inches narrower than the section width.

BTW did you swap 16 wheels for a 16.5 or is the 16.5 an option?

My bad, thats why I had to go back and fix my post, for some reason I had 16.5 stuck in my head :o:

So now my tires shortened up a half an inch :(

Yup your right.

I just checked the tire specs on bridgestone web site and my section width is 9.3 inches but the tread width is only 6.9 inches or about 27 1/2 inches total for 4

So much for my steam roller.

I'm going to bed now
