False. The 6.2 was design from scratch, in conjunction with Detroit diesel. So if you want to tell everyone you have a Detroit in your pickup, your not far off.

The older 5.7 diesel was based off a gas 350, there were not a bad motor if you get a post 1980 model, the '78 and '79 are the bad ones.

While this is certainly a popular belief, I don't think it is true. See this page for what appears to be accurate information.

I didnt check the link yet but my understanding is the first 6.2 was an oldsmobile gas engine with cylinder wall sleaves put in for the extra compression.

No, the first 6.2 was a joint development of Chevrolet and Detroit Diesel. It was the Olds 5.7 diesel (1978-84) which used a heavily-modified block derived from the Olds 350 gas.

So it was basically a gas motor converted to run on Diesel. I get what you are asking and from what I have been told that is true. Just my two cents.

NO, False, incorrect.

A 6.2lt diesel has absolutely nothing to do with any gas engine. It was made from the ground up to be a diesel. Its design is different than the 350 and bears no resemblance beyond their both engines.

The only "conversion" diesel was the old 1979 350 5.7lt diesel and even those after 81 were straight Goodwrench diesels.
