I am new to this whole diesel thing so I need a little help. I have been driving non-diesel trucks for years but I recently upgraded my trailer to a 30ft weekend warrior and my truck isn’t cutting it anymore. I am set on getting a used Chevy but first, I am looking for your input on the two engines, LLY and LB7. I have already read the “Technical” differences but I want to here for you, the people who actually have these motors and which one you feel is more solid and reliable. Is it worth a couple thousand for to get the LLY? I don’t mind giving up a little power with the LB7, I am just looking for reliability.

some LLY's have been overheating, some LB7's have had injector problems.

Friend is a service mgr at a local dealership. His claim is that the 01 and 02 LB7's have had more injector problems than the 03-04 LB7's. you hear on these boards of those who have had problems with both. I know many folks at work and locally that have duramax's and of the couple dozen of us with a mix of LLY and LB7 non of us have had ANY engine related issues. Most of us are running stock or close to it. LB7 may get slightly better mpg on the hiway. Several of us run together to races etc. and our mileages are very close to each other, within 1mpg on the highway, but the LB7 seems to have a very slight edge.

IMHO how someone maintained the rig would be higher on my decision than which motor it had.
