: Battery Acid leaks!

This is a great site, lots of good info. I'm hoping someone can help me. Last May the positive post to the passenger side battery began leaking acid. At the time the dealer said "it happens ocassionally" so I had the battery replaced. Well, this week the positive post to the drivers side battery is now leaking acid. What gives? I have never seen this happen and to have both my batteries do this within 6 months seems like something else is at work here. Could my charging system be over/under charging? Has this ever happened to anyone else out there? Help me out guys!
Thanks

This is common with the AC/Delco batteries and has been going on for a few years now. I have lost six batteries in the same fashion on different GM vehicles.

Just search for optima and read some similar stories. Your charging system is fine.

Thanks BMDMAX,
I did a search as you suggested. I think I'll keep my new delcos for a year or two to get some use out of them then I'll swap them out for Optimas.

Keep a eye on the battery. I have gotten rid of both of my delco POS batteries and picked up some napa orbitals. You said your passenger side battery? Watch out for the leak dripping down, there is a wire that runs along your fenderwell that goes to your accumulator that the acid will quickly eat through.

Between oil changes my passenger side battery started leaking and ate through the support and wiring. Didnt notice it till I saw that my frame had all of the undercoating gone in the area.

Stay away from ACDelco batteries. I should know, Im a ACDelco dealer.

My first set of AC Delcos lasted 70k before I noticed the acid mess!!

The napa batteries would only last about 10K before replacemnt and they were the "NASCAR" version. After four passenger side batteris I went to the optima red top. best thing I put on the truck, more cranking power!!

I've seen a few of them do this. Just make sure to get them out of there as soon as you see it because the acid is obviously hard on all the metal parts it leaks on. Mine didn't leak, but one was completely dead at 40k. I had been running on one battery for a little while and noticed because the truck was cranking slow even when warm. I didn't have the coin for optimas, so I put some regular batteries in it. I did replace them both, however, even though only one of them appeared to be bad.

Go ahead and replace them, the acid will do NASTY things to (almost) everything it touches. I believe it destroied the windshield washer motor on mine.
Mine leaked on the pos. terminal on the drivers side and corroded the bolt so badly that I had to fight with vice grips to remove it from the battery. Not a lot of fun in the confined area around the battery. I had to pull the battery and try to balance it on the ft. support to remove the bolt.
Also the power loss from a corroded terminal can be extensive. I had starting issues with the old batteries (even though they would show full charge at the terminals), no problems since I replaced (with Optimas).

Remember to change both of your batteries at the same time.

Gel cell is the way to go IMO.
