: okay, anyone have opinions on the series 60 DD?
charlie780 12-05-2005, 12:09 AM i know i asked about the ISX, but the truck i drive for my dad, which is a 95 ford L9000 dump, has a 11.1L series 60 365hp
ive heard good things about these, and some bad, i find it to real good on fuel, and smooth
up here in canada, those series 60s liked to be plugged in during winter, even mild winter, they seem harder to start than a cummins or cat,
heck, our old 81 international with a cummins 350 big cam 3 starts better!
diesel66 12-05-2005, 11:57 AM If you can keep the oil from leaking out of the diamond seal, then you've conquered the main problem. S60's do typically have better economy than similar sized cummins, or cats, but the low end grunt power isn't quite as good. As far as cold weather starting, that could be any number of things(low compression, timing, fuel quality, cranking speed), my rule of thumb is plug it in if it's below freezing.
06lbzduramax 12-16-2005, 10:58 PM I have 150,000 miles on my 04 fl with the series 60 with no trouble at all, and I pull doubles up and down a mountain pass every day. when its plugged in it fires right up no matter the temp. the only time it did not fire was last week I forgot to plug it in and it was -12. a quick jump and she fired right up.
TurboIndian 12-20-2005, 07:31 PM I have to agree with diesel66 on the low end torque. I move heavy loads day in & day out, my next one will have a cat! a buddy of mine has a Pete with a 500hp cat, & I have a 500hp s60, we were both running about 95,000#'s @ 60 mph, we hit I 485 side by side he pulled away from me until 74 mph, after 74 I went by him @ 85. once my s60 gets to 74 it will roll on but as soon as it drops below 74mph it's done for Censored. as for the fuel economy it's unheard of, best of 6.82 last quarter. light weight I weigh 41,780#'s & I can get 8.2 mpg:ro) , bob tailing I can get 9.8mpg.
stackedmax 12-22-2005, 06:07 PM We put a Pitts. Power box on ours, made a huge difference!

Never heard a bad thing about them, Im thinking about buying one for my Detroit 430/470.
HiluxxuliH 01-14-2006, 01:26 AM The place I work for has 5 freightliners and they all have DD series 60 and they are really nice all 450 to 475 horse . we also have two backup tractors a million mile International cab over and a 300,000 mile volvo white both mid 80,s they have the cummins in them and they start OK after sitting for weeks on end.
06lbzduramax 01-14-2006, 01:03 PM I have 150,000 miles on my 04 fl with the series 60 with no trouble at all, and I pull doubles up and down a mountain pass every day. when its plugged in it fires right up no matter the temp. the only time it did not fire was last week I forgot to plug it in and it was -12. a quick jump and she fired right up.
I must recant my no problem quote, while driving down the interstate yesterday the fan came off pully and all and went through the radiator:(
the tow truck driver said it is a fairley common and he hauls about one series 60 a month to the shop with the same problem, and mine was the second this week. the tech at the shop confirmed his story also. oh well I guess I cant complain to loud, over a 150,000 miles with no problems is not bad I guess.
Ok, Being A Pitts By Birth, Whats A Pitts Power Box ???

zsqure 01-20-2006, 09:33 PM SIZE DOES MATTER! We have a bunch of L9000's with dd, cat and cummins power. The best one of the bunch is a 3406 cat (C15) at 355hp and 925k on the odo (In a single axle dump truck). The next in line are the small displacement DD at 365hp they are snowplow trucks (11' salt hoppers and 11' plows) and have 500-600k on them and start all the time even below freezing when we forget to plug them in. The cummins trucks are the lowly L10 they just keep chugging along. It's a toss up between the cat and the DD. Now that DD has a 15 liter engine maybe they can compete with cat.
NathanielD 01-21-2006, 02:07 AM I hear the DD is cheaper to repair/re-build and easier to get parts.
partsguy662 01-21-2006, 06:22 PM The Series 60 was fairly simple to look up parts for. No CPL number needed (cummins), no arrangement number needed (caterpillar).
Of course, truck drivers are no different from the rest of us. They form an opinion (prejudice) to an engine, and they'll argue why it's better until they're blue in the face. Of course, my usual reply was "They're all junk, that's why I have a job here in the parts department ):h
