: Wind Whistle ... "cant find"
Rcher 02-21-2004, 08:44 PM I've looked all over these forums and MCT and cannot find any posts that match my problem.
Recently I have been hearing a "wind whistle" from where I figure is somewhere on the drivers side front windshield area. It shows up at any speed, the faster, the louder. I dont think its the turbo I'm hearing because I can be driving and throw it into neutral, let the engine idle down and I still hear the whistle.
Today I removed the outer moulding on the outside of the "A" pillar that covers the windshield and ran a bead of RTV silicone along the underside of the moulding and replaced .... "it still whistles". I had my wife drive and I was all over inside the truck trying to pin point this noise but I just cannot find it.
Anybody else have this problem or know of anyone who has? This is extremely annoying!!
Thanks in advance.
Bronco 02-21-2004, 08:56 PM Rcher,
What is the last thing you added/changed on your truck before the whistle started?
Rcher 02-21-2004, 09:12 PM I've just recently made a "boatload" of changes.
LIft kit, tires, wheels, shocks ....
It really sounds to me like its coming from the windshield area tho. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
Ventvisors add wind noise
Rcher 02-21-2004, 10:05 PM I dont have ventvisors either. I do have a dealer installed GM hood protector but thats been there since the day I took delivery of the truck. This whistle has been evident for about the last few weeks.
Bronco 02-21-2004, 10:08 PM Rcher,
Not to be insultive, but any chance it is your tires whining?
Rcher 02-22-2004, 05:46 AM I dont think so, I can hear the tires ... completely different sound. No insult taken http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
jbplock 02-22-2004, 07:35 AM Any changes to the mirrors? I use to get a whistle on my 98 K3500 whenever I put on the extended trailer/towing mirrors.
Believe it or not, if you do determine it's not enough compression in the door to body seal up top, you can actually bend the door frame slightly so the top squeezes the seal more.
Body shops do it. They put the window down, position themselves beteen the door and the truck and yank on the top of the door.
This is a last resort if there is a compression issue related to door alignment.
ktb66062 02-22-2004, 01:35 PM I have a friend that just put a bug shield on his and said that he is now getting a wind noise. Might try taking it off and see if the noise is still there.
GMCSID 02-22-2004, 02:05 PM There have been instances where bug deflectors cause a noise at the windshield. There are new reveal moldings that help this. Part number 15131200-01. Edited by: GMCSID
SpoolinTurbo 02-22-2004, 04:27 PM I have a wind whistle as well at varying speeds from 35-75 mph. The only thing I recently installed was my skull trailer hitch cover.
DougO 02-23-2004, 07:34 PM It could be from the HVAC box under / behind the dash. Mine does it when it is cold out, had it resealed once, lasted over night. It disappears at temps above 45f. Can't wait for warm weather again.

Hired Gun 02-24-2004, 03:20 PM Mine has a whistle also. Only thing I have done cosmetically is a putco flame grill in the thing.
burntb4 03-27-2004, 08:22 PM do you notice the noise is LOUDER nad more consistent when you drive into a head wind.if so i bet it's the bug deflector or something like a bullguard causing it.Mine was fine until i put both these items on and i only get the noise in a headwind. To me it seems to be on the pass. side but when i have a pass. they say it seems to come from my side.Go figger!
Rcher 03-27-2004, 10:42 PM Yes, in fact I do hear the noise more when going into the wind. I do have the GM bug deflector and I guess it could be that making the whistle. I suppose I should remove it for a few days and see if that eliminates the problem. That would be the easiest thing to do to troubleshoot this noise .... by process of elimination.
burntb4 03-27-2004, 11:11 PM Hey Rcher--that sounds like a plan.i'd make a mess of mine if i did it.If you do--please post back so the rest of us will know.good Luck
burntb4 03-30-2004, 11:03 PM Hello again Rcher.

Rcher 03-31-2004, 07:23 AM burntb4,
I already did that fix, I actually removed those windshield mouldings and used RTV silicone on the underside and replaced them. That solved the "tapping" noise.
I still have the "whistle" around the windshield area. I havent had time to pull off the bug shield yet to see if that is the cause.
Thanks for your link, if we keep looking, we'll find the fix !!
dmaxscott 03-31-2004, 11:48 AM I got wind noise that I could not find until I had someone ride with me and located. It was on the pass. side and was wind related.
Fix was to place electrical tape on the outside and the noise has not returned. Yeah I know 50k for a truck and have tape on the windshield. The dealer would not even look at it as long as I had the bug deflector on it. He said no way and said it was because of the deflector that I got the noise. Some things are not worth the battle and the tape is not noticable unless you really are looking for it.
Tape = no noise. Try taping both sides or just the side you think it is coming from. Worth a try and takes 2 minutes.
Durabill 04-01-2004, 08:40 PM I TOOK A 2004 EXT. CAB 4 DR. FOR A TEST RIDE AND HAD A LOT OF WIND NOISE ON THE FRONT OF THE DRIVERS DOOR ABOVE THE MIRROR AND COULD NOT FIND THE REASON FOR IT. THEN AFTER I BOUGHT A DIFFERENT 2004 I REALIZED THAT IF THE REAR DOOR WAS NOT SLAMMED TIGHT THAT IT DID NOT CLOSE ALL THE WAY AND LEFT THE FRONT DOOR NOT CLOSE TIGHT ENOUGH TO SEAL OFF THE AIR. TRY SLAMMING THE REAR DOOR CLOSED THEN SEE IF THE NOISE GOES AWAY. THIS WILL HAPPEN ON BOTH SIDES OF THE TRUCK. FUNNY THING IS THAT IT NEVER HAPPENED ON MY 2002 IN 36000 MILE THAT I DROVE IT BUT HAPPENS REGULARLY ON MY 2004. THEY MUST HAVE CHANGED THE ADJUSTMENT ON THE REAR DOOR MAKING IT HARDER TO CLOSE ALL THE WAY UNLESS IT IS SLAMMED.
Dmax Tim 04-03-2004, 01:35 PM DURA, maybe u are getting older and weak http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif , it would be hard for his CC to do that.
