I see in the forum's heading that the vans have this combo.
Is this true?
If so, how well does it hold up behind a healthy DMAX w/mods?
Thanks.

How would we know? They are just starting to hit the streets now.

The DMAX they are putting in the vans are detuned compared to the HD trucks. Combine that with lots of torque management and a lighter vehicle not intended for heavy towing and the 4L80E should do just fine. Time will tell however.

GM did not use the 4L80E behind a D-max in HD trucks because it is seriously pushing the limits of that tranny. The 4L80E is a great transmission, maybe with all the mods it can handle it but i certainly would take an allison over a 4L80E. NorCal is right the D-max in vans is not the same as the d-max you find in the HD trucks.

I remember reading in the LB7 section where several of the first D-max's had 4L80's behind them. Don't quote me on that one but I did read it there. The 4L80 built right is a good tranny. Many people running them behind high horse big blocks in racing, and quite a few running around behind some stout cummins engines. Stock it is alright, build it up a little and it aint a bad box.

Uh, negative on that bud...Unless they were early experimental trucks....
None of the production trucks came with the 4L80E and a duramax motor...The allison was the huge selling point when the duramax came to light in late 00 (as the 01 models) :)

I remember reading a few years ago that the 4l80/85 were not able to pass durability testing from gm with the torque of the duramax. I have a few customers running 800 hp and 700 plus ft lbs of tq with 4l80's behind gas engines BUT most these hot rods weigh 3000-3500 pounds, not 7000 plus another 14,000 and even then theres a few guys that have wiped out the best 34 element intermediate sprag thats out on the market,Smitty

Is the 4L80E similar in design & strength of a TH400?
If not, can it be upgraded for hi power?
Not to sound:eek: It's just I know the TH400's & TH350's
from using them in my drag cars. However I don't know
much about the 4L80E's
Thanks.

The 4L80E is basically a modified TH400 with an overdrive.

Built it would probably do well behind a Duramax.
