I have a 2003 2500HD I recently purchased. Using the search feature, I found that several others have experienced problems with their speedo 'sticking' at a certain MPH caused by GM's ultra high quality stepper motors.
My problem is a little different, but I wanted to see if you guys think it is caused by the same thing. At times, my speedo stays at zero while driving. If I turn the ignition off and back on, it will start reading again. It is also 'jumpy' like 2 MPH at a time (which I saw someone else had that same problem). Most recently, the speedo will go up to about 35 MPH, and no higher, and gradually, the max MPH gets lower and lower until it gets back to zero and stays. I saw in another post that someone's dealer confirmed that the issue WAS covered under the 100000 mile warranty. Does anybody know for sure if this is the case?? Thanks for the help----Dusty.

Its a KNOWN problem with the speedos and GM will replace it. Well that is what my service writer told me when I took my truck in for a replacement.

My speedo did pretty much the same as you. Sometimes it stayed at "0", sometimes it stayed at "40" when the truck was off or driving. Even at times it showed me doing "120" when I was doing "70" on the freeway. Then after a few shut offs, back down to "0" when truck was off.

It all the same, bad cluster.....get it replaced at the dealer.

Talked to the dealer today. They said wanrranty won't cover it. Truck has 81,000 on it. I'm gonna call GM customer care and see if I can squeeze something out of them. Thanks man

Ya, give them a call. Doesnt cost them anything. These speedo are known to do this and there are alot of people having the same problem. GM knows that these speedo do this and it would be nice to step up and fix it no matter what the mileage is.

Mine started to do that stuff this week. 40 mph is 0 ! How much are the muther clusters? ATS used to have the escalade model for about $300 if I remember right, as part of there tranny upgrade package but I don't see it there anymore!

Don't think temperature plays a part. Mine crapped out in September - in Mississippi.

The guages do a "self check?" at each start? I put the parking brake on, and put the ally in a gear, using the neutral safety switch so it wont start, cycle the switch to start then back to on, each time it'll knock about 5 MPH off of the stuck speedo till back to 0. Well it does on mine any way. I can set it back to "0" this way and it will last most of the day! While we wait for "back ordered units."

repp, had this problem three times on my 03 gasser thats one of the reasons why i got rid of it, every 40,000 kms I would have to get the instrument cluster replaced, first time involed the gas gauge going in circles second and third time was the speedometer sticking, kinda funny when the truck is in park and it sais your going 80 or 170 km/hr.....needless to say even after my warrenty was up, i had it replaced under warrenty still, had so many problems with that truck that i wrote a 12 page letter to GM....

Well mine has started acting funky - 18,000 miles on her. Says 80mph when I'm doing about 25mph. Won't go back to '0' and it's doing the jumping in mph segments..... going in Friday for a look at the dealer. I miss my simple oil leaks on my Powerstroke =). I'm sort of glad it's a known problem (love this forum)!
