: What box to run?
TommJr 12-03-2005, 12:32 PM just bought an 05' cummins and would like to know what performance upgrades work best with the Dodge?
A Friend of mine runs a ford w/ the edge juice and it doesn't seem to run quite right.
On the other hand, another friend of mine has an 03 dmax that goes like h*ll, with the juice attitude combo.
Just wondering if performance upgrades are like snowmobiles? (ex: Crankshop to Ski-Doo, Black Magic to Arctic Cat)?
Thanks!
thedodgeman188 12-03-2005, 02:16 PM hey if u are goin to chip ur dodge i would use bullydog .
Bowtie Boy 12-03-2005, 02:25 PM I have a buddy with an 05 dodge and he likes his TST Powermax.
rjm022 12-03-2005, 05:53 PM quadzilla zxt. a cheaper box by price only. 65hp and 165lbs ft torgue gain, along with a 1.5 mileage increase
moose3406 12-05-2005, 01:23 AM All depends on what u want to do with the truck. If u want a box that u will never outgrow as u add different mods then I would suggest the TST Powermax. If u just want a lil extra power and mileage then the Edge EZ and the mild quadzilla r good boxes to look at. Both give mild hp improvements and usually 1-2 mpg better if u can keep ur foot out of it.

Jimmy D 12-05-2005, 09:26 PM Hey ya'll. I'm new to this forum and my Quad box, pod and gauges are "in the mail". I researched different boxes and my findings tell me that the Edge boxes run pretty high EGT's in the Cummins and the bully dog programmers are tracable. The quad box doesn't run into the computer at all which makes it untracable. Right? Since I'm only 10K into a 100K warranty, I opted for this one. I also chose the 100 hp box so I wouldn't get myself into mechanical trouble. Anyway, right or wrong, that was my reasoning. I've been reading the posts for a little while now and look forward to chatting with you guys. I like to post some pics, but don't know how yet. In due time I guess. I've got a silver 05 2500 auto with a matching cap, custom cab lights, nerf bars & tinted windows. In two days, I'll have the triple gauge pod and Qaud box to boot! I traded my 04 Yukon in for this truck and haven't looked back! It tows my little 23' boat like it's not even back there.
MileHighCTD 12-05-2005, 11:17 PM Don't forget to upgrade the tranny, you will notice a performance gain by just getting more power to the ground, as well as having a more efficient tranny. Bombs away....
Jimmy D 12-06-2005, 10:14 AM I hope that "bombs away" isn't referring to me! Isn't the 48RE a good tranny designed to handle 200HP over stock?
king d 12-06-2005, 07:13 PM not for long it isnt
MileHighCTD 12-06-2005, 08:06 PM The "bombs away" is just a reference to the slippery slope of bombing. The 48RE is a good tranny, but as king d put it, it won't hold 200 over stock very long. Keep in mind also, the performance boxes often quote HP ratings at the rear wheels and the 200 over stock is probably crank HP.
Jimmy D 12-07-2005, 08:35 AM Are you guys saying that 325/610 is all the 48RE can handle? I respect your opinions and would appreciate more of them. I'm primarily looking for fuel efficiency with a little "umph" when I want it. One of the reasons I didn't get a more powerful module is because I like the truck and prefer it doesn't grenade.
I installed a K&N cold air intake and removed it a few days later. All it did was make the truck louder than a PowerStroke and the mileage actually dropped a hair. I put the stock intake back on and got an aftermarket filter - that seemed to help a little and the sound was in between. After that, I had a local machine shop make an insulated piece of pipe to replace the factory silencer. That made the truck louder (again) and the computer showed a 70 mile round trip 2.5 mpg worse than stock. I'm comfortable with the intake side, but what can you tell me about the exhasut side? Is 4" from the turbo back sufficient? What about the resinator (?) or CAT? Thanks again for your input!

I too have the K&N. I saw no change in mileage...and I saw no change when I changed the exhaust...mileage at least. I did see a drop in EGT's though, and that matters more since I will pull a heavy load pretty often. As for 200hp over factory?? Well the tranny could probably handle it with minimal upgrades, but your torque converter will be your failing item. I have the Banks with Six Gun (supposedly 126hp extra) and under load or just cruisin' I haven't had any problems with that setting. The Banks might have gained 1 mpg for my truck..but I didn't buy it for that purpose. I am looking at the TST now. More power potential. I am also considering a new torque converter and some tranny upgrades. Those two additions will make difference. The 48RE will handle more than the 325/610, just hard telling how much more. Your driving style will be the factor here.
05610 12-08-2005, 10:30 PM the 48RE will hold over 1000 ft/lbs. with the right torque converter. several companies make good ones. gonna have to dish out some cash for it though. as far as chips. the banks is good for the everyday driver that just wants a little more power. great drivability and its a know product. Edge is the same. if you want power, TST. the edge "hotbox" is decent. but nothin near the power of TST. get the PowerMax CR, Pusher pump, good torque converter and if you want some small injectors. several companies now make turbo upgrades if you like. banks has a nice one. its a garrett/banks turbo. or you can stack boxes if you like.
sloverado 12-13-2005, 02:35 PM I just ordered the Edge juice with ***. I hope it works well for me.
Jimmy D 12-13-2005, 05:14 PM Good info guys, thanks. Sounds like I'll let the intake and exhaust ride. Maybe next year, I'll look into some tranny work. I just hate to tear into something with a factory warranty. Especially since my box is untracable and can be yanked in less than 10 minutes. You know? (It's a Quadzilla race module.)
As far as my driving habits - I drive about 30K a year and a lot of that is highway driving. During the summer, I drive it about 200 miles 10 times towing a 5,500 boat & trailer. My truck laughed at it when it was stock and I can't imagine how it'll be next summer. Usually I'm in "grandpa mode", but sometimes, my foot slips and I accidently nail the pedal. I hate it when that happens!
Morse 12-14-2005, 11:41 PM Just remember, the diesel thing is "very" addicting.. I told myself I wasn't going to mess with my 05 either. I'd leave the speed to my play truck.. Didn't happen. I've done stacked boxes, turbo, and exhaust so far.. Doing trans friday. My odometer currently reads around 5400 miles.. Be prepared..
Jimmy D 12-15-2005, 10:50 AM Yeah, thanks man...that's all I need - another money hole! Mama has cut me off from spending any more dough on our boat and now this? LOL! Let me know how your tranny work goes. Did you rip yours, or do you just "need" more power at the wheels? With stacked boxes, turbo and a tranny rebuild I bet you will be able to roast your duals at will below 15 mph (without the brake).

On the 325hp Cummins, The Six-Gun w/Speedloader is +112hp best gain and +87hp peak to peak.

not quit. banks actually says, and i quote : Six-Gun’s power increase (+105 hp and +258 lb-ft…with recommended airflow improvements). With Speed-Loader upgrade: +126 hp and +290 lb-ft…with recommended airflow improvements.
this information can be found on his site, bankspower.com
we dyno'd cummins600 truck with the module set on 6. put down 840 some ft/lbs to the wheels. he has the actual numbers

Well put!! I did not gain the advertised 126hp or 290 ft/lb increase. However I was pretty close. I wish I had dyno'ed the truck before I did anything to it. That way I could really tell how much improvement there was. I will remember that for the next Cummins I buy...hit the dyno....then intake/ exhaust....then programmer....then torque converter/ tranny....turbo....another programmer....another tranny....injectors....another turbo.......well you get the point!!
crazylarry6 12-17-2005, 09:17 PM Im not to fond of the banks six gun or the edge..if you want to put the power down go with Bully Dogs Power Pup w/Crazy Larry program. You can only get the Crazy Larry Program for 04.5 to present Cummins....Its a wild ride.....

If you go to their website, click on the Six-Gun module for the Dodge and go to the bottom of the screen. You'll see dyno results on the bottom. Click on that and it will give you dyno results for the 235hp, 305hp and 325hp motor. You'll find the information that I gave you there. The 126hp w/Speedloader is for the 235hp motor.
Jimmy D 12-24-2005, 06:10 PM I'm tossing the gauges on my truck in the next few days and have a couple of questions for you guys. Hopefully, some of you'll have time to answer them.
Does the 05 48RE have a stock port for the tranny temp? If so, where?
Does it matter if the EGT sensor is on the horizontal or vertical part of the manifold?
Where is the best place to tap in for the boost line?
Simple questions I know, but I'd bet 90% of you guys have done each one of these at least once! Thanks again!
