Installed my new fuel filter today and discovered the old filter was defective. The filter media had come detached from the filter housing allowing fuel to flow through unfiltered.
Could this be one reason GM is offering free fuel filter replacements? I remember reading some time ago that someone else had this same thing happen to them. Anybody else? Should I give the filter to the local dealership?

You might want to give that to them, I do believe that is the reason they are changing them as you said. I think they might like to see that one. I know that a few others had some issues but not sure if they were the same. Good luck

How did you find it. Did you cut the can open and the filter was broken loose??

I had the same thing happen and I know of one other person as well. Both were with the first designed single layer media filters. Did this happen with the same or was it the dual media? If dual was it the long or short element?

The bad filter was the old style single element type. Its clear when you take it off that it is broken. Media moves up and down and rattles when you shake it. If you remove the WIF sensor, you can use your finger to move the media around.
I now have the new and improved, dual pleat, long filter.

I now have the new and improved, dual pleat, long filter.I have the same symptoms with a new, dual pleat, long filter, so it is not a problem with just the old style filters. Shake your filters before you install them. They should make no noise. If they do, pitch them.
