: Thinking about a 97 6.5 TD, tell me all you know...
mannytranny 02-20-2004, 09:49 PM I have "stumbled" across an opportunity to buy a 6.5 TD tahoe. right around 60k miles.
If yall could list all the things that could go wrong, that would be awesome.
As I understand, the fuel pump is a problem. Right? Or at least the lift pump failing then taking out the fuel pump, right?
Anyway, what are the common problems with them?
I would buy and probably resell, so I like low risk...
Thanks
Turbine Doc 02-20-2004, 10:42 PM Injection Pump is still under warranty to 120K, block because of cracking problems is also warr to 100K IIRC, overheat problems common to 6.5 should be reduced as you have the dual thermostat as part of GM 97 + year GM "improvements", other than standard used car checks, brakes, trans, compression, etc 6.5 more robust than what you see on various pages, people without problems/questions generally don't post so you have a scewed mix, I was worried sick about my 6.5 when I 1st joined over at TDP in 01 and read "all the problems" there.
A lot has to do with how it was driven by previous owner, mine was 3 yr old at 37K in 2001 when I bought it now I have 75K, alternator, and PMD/IP only major problems. IP/FSD problems can be overcome with addition of FSD cooler and proper torque of PMD transistor mounting nuts.
Test drive vehicle until it gets as warm as possible under hood, if it shuts down for no apparent reason/ no check engine light/no codes after shutdown, then restarts; this is classic symptom of PMD fail/problem.
Lift pump power can also give problems as well as GM ground loop design could be better, most of those issues enough folks BTDT around to help you sort the problems out. Harmonic balancer change recommended at 100K if rubber cracks starting from oil saturation, oil cooler and water quick disconnect copulings poor desigin also has been problem in some, not mine yet. If the deal is a good one I'd say go for it
I see from your sig you have a DMAX,the 6.5 stock won't match DMAX stock, Hp is limited in stock dress out, but a modified 6.5 see my sig http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif can make a stock DMAXER, P-stroke, Cummins sit up and take notice, especially wrapped in K1500 PU or Tahoe sheet metal most don't know 6.5TD came in a 1/2T package.
I also see you have TDI VW PM me I'm in middle of a 01 TDI New Beetle timing belt change, want to talk to you about those injectors and exhaust.Edited by: Turbine Doc
mannytranny 02-20-2004, 11:09 PM Thanks,
I dont know what the PMD and FSD are...???
The problem with this is that I cannot test drive it. I can start it, but no drivey...
It is at an auction. If I discover these things on the drive home, however, I can do a u E and they will buy it back...
What is the cost for these PMD and FSD items? Are they hard to replace?
It is maintained as per factory specs...Thats awesome that its got a 120k warranty on the IP...
Thanks, Ill PM about the TDI in a minute...
dieseltech01 02-21-2004, 12:29 AM The pmd mounts to the side of the injector pump. Very important it is working properly. If the pmd has problems your trucks going to have problems. Its not to bad to replace, you just have to take the intake off and rotate the pump to get the 4 screws out. Atleast you have abou 60k miles left on the warranty.
Turbine Doc 02-21-2004, 01:35 AM PMD/FSD,
Same animal pump mtd driver or fuel solenoid driver stock location is mounted on side of IP, PITA to access in current location, high failure rate item hence extended warranty requirement. Most relocate FSD to a heat sink off the IP. The fuel in the IP is supposed to keep FSD transistors cool, much debate if failure mode is heat , loose fasteners, or combination of both.
I'm engine bay mounted away from IP "valley" OEM location very hot there, some say my location even off engine is still too hot, some mount inside bumper by "nose holes" or under bumper. I have had 1 additional failure, I don't suspect heat was the problem, FSD was cool to touch and it was cool 50 F day. I drove home with the glovebox spare I carry, remote amount benefit is quick access <5 min. swap time. Got home retorqued nuts on "BAD" FSD and it started working, so I have (3) 1 on heat sink, 1 glove box spare, and original IP mounted one, but that one is a PITA to plug and unplug which is justification for glovebox spare.
mannytranny 02-26-2004, 06:07 PM Thank you gentelmen...
Im still not sure if I should go for these or not...There are some broncos there, and Ive had good luck with them...
Im just trying to decide if the reputation of these is going to scare folks away...
Am I correct in my assumption that any of these FDS, IP and PMD are covered under warranty?
If those are really the only wide spread problems of the rig, then I should be fine...Right?
HowieE 02-27-2004, 09:46 AM Yes the injection pump and it's driver, called FSD or PMD the same thing , are covered under warranty. However most GM/Chevy dealers have no knowledge of diesels and will just change out the injection pump no matter what is wrong because they are garranted payment form GM. You can take steps to greatly extend the life of the pump by using a fuel additive and by mounting a remote FSD. The fuel additive cost pennies per mile and realy provides a bang for the buck. You can purchase a remote mounting fit for the FSD for under $400.00 as apposed to the $2,000.00 to $3,000.00 that a commonaly quoted for a pump change. Yes even some GM dealers will be so nice as to quote you these prices even while under warranty.
I am pulling a total of 16,540lbe and now have 131,000 miles on the original pump. Look at my signature and web site for some ideas.
Turbine Doc 03-02-2004, 12:20 AM Manny did you decide I just saw you were looking at a Bronco maybe ?? Man you are a glutton for punishment http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif; I got one of them too, it's parked living up to Fix Or Repair Daily slang, but it's a 84 B2 1st year of EEC-IV (eek-4 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif FORD) computer emission, carb, and spark control, none of which works now.
