: Elevated idle question??

Will having the finger stick and EGR blocker mods prevent "elevated idle" function to work properly? I have these mods and cannot figure why my "elevated idle" function will not work. Just thinking maybe related but not sure. Got down to 32 degrees the other morning and had the function on with no high idle. Maybe not cold enough outside yet???

Probably not cold enough yet. The motor has to be cold as well. Non of those things will prevent it to work. You might never see it work in Texas.

dont rely on the mirror temp. High idle works off of IAT. (intake air temp) The underhood temp is usually a little warmer than the mirror temp. Also, engine coolant tmep has to be below 150.

I have had mine go on at 39 degrees. I have also had it NOT go on at 33. I think humidity plays a big part. After all, that mass air sensor is measuring quality, quantity, density, along with temp...Its prolly one of the most imporntant sensors out there that most people overlook.

yeah good call Unit453...that sounds exactly right about the density etc.. I never thought about that before.

More humid the air= more fuel required to burn. Engine works harder. I would think.....?

I don't feel like diggin out the manual right now, but IIRC doesn't the parking brake need to be engaged?

Probably wrong, but it seems like I remember reading that.

No it doesn't need to be engaged on an automatic.

Hmm, probably so as I remember one time I left my MAF unhooked and it kick the idle up. I'm sure I didn't have the p-brake on at the time now that I think about it.

Today my high idle kicked in - OAT 35 degrees. Truck in park, emergency brake engaged. When I released the parking brake, I hit my regular brake, which disengaged high idle. My goes up to about 1400 rpms on the oem tach. Low humidity today here in Maryland - sun was out full - just very cold.

Would having a K&N air filter cause the elevated idle to come on more frequently, less frequently or have no effect? I don't know much about it and was just wondering.

I went thru the DIC center and activated my high idle since it has not gone on when leaving work after sitting 10 hrs at 22 degrees. So it worked today and stayed on until the engine was hot enough. Nice that is disengages when you touch the break and reactivates when I left it running to go into the store.

After reading JJCgolf72's reply, I feel better, But I still have to ask.

This morning after getting off my 8 hour watch, I started the truck to warm and everything worked as advertised. After the elevated idle kicked off on its own, i turned the heater on a little and started driving. After about two minutes of driving, I had to stop and let the geese cross the road. While sitting there, the elevated idle came back on. Is this normal or is there something to look into.

My idle will go back up only if I am in park with my foot not on the brake or accelarator. Once my vehicle has reaches a warm temp the idle does not kick back up for me in park.

So in answer - mine has not gone up to high at a stop light or crosswalk with my foot on the brake.

Hope this helps.

If the engine coolant temperature drops below 150, it will turn back on. Above 150 degrees ECT, it shuts off.

Thanks guys! I guess I haven't got to use it enough to know its criteria yet.

High idle is a wonderful thing.

This morning I started truck and all was as usual then all of a sudden the idle ramped up as designed with "elevated idle" function on. Got below 30 degrees last night. Very cool.:ro)

It is my first diesel truck and am trying to understand the elevated idle's purpose. Too lazy to read the manual.. what purpose does it do with elevated idle in cold weather? What harm will it do if the elevated idle function is turned off and let it idle under 1000 rpm for a period of time under cold weather?

My high idle kicked in tonight temp was 28 degrees no park brake

It won't do any harm if it is OFF. It is there to make life easier and will dramatically increase the time it takes for your truck to warm up. It has been very cold up here the last few weeks (low single digits, and highs in the teens to mid twenties) So every morning before work, and every day when I leave work, that elevated idle has been kicking. You should see what that does to your average fuel economy!!!!!!!!!! Althought my long term average is about 17.9 (I have 16,000 miles on the truck and I got the truck 5 months ago) it reads 13.9 right now as I haven't been on a long trip since Dec 3&4th.
